Ian's head tilted slightly as he watched her, making Diana shift uncomfortably on her feet. He'd never looked at her like that—like she was an irritating presence he wanted gone.
"I'm sorry," she said.
"For what?" His tone warred with calm, but she could hear the agitation beneath it.
"For what I said…back then. I didn't mean it like that and, um…" She bit her bottom lip, fidgeting. "I know you're upset, and I'm—"
"I'm not upset."
"Ian—"
"What makes you think I'd be upset?" He leaned down to her height, his head tilted to the side, expression cold. "You said it yourself, nothing can ever happen between us. I mean nothing to you, and you certainly don't need me. There's nothing to be upset about, after all, I told you myself that I'm done with you."
"I didn't mean to say that," she choked out.
