Chapter 17 - Chapter 17- Attack on wolves

Grey was silent for a few seconds before nodding. After breakfast, Grey and the Captain took a stroll around the outer settlement of the scavenger camp. In the afternoon, they returned to eat lunch before strolling around the inner settlements.

Before evening, they returned and ate dinner before the Captain went to his room and did not return till morning.

This same thing continued to happen for several days. Despite the Captain's strange behavior, Grey decided not to ask.

But on this day, the Captain suddenly came out from his room and said to Grey. "Tomorrow we are going for a hunting expedition. Be prepared." He nodded at the Captain and he cultivated throughout the night.

When morning came, the Captain did not stand above the scavenger camp. Instead, both he and Grey left before the sun rose up.

When they were outside of the corroded zone, Grey saw the burly man waiting patiently outside. He sighted them from the distance and together, they left for the corroded zone.

A few hours later, they met up with Luo. She gave him a warm smile with made his face a little flushed before she nodded at the Captain.

Then came the two other men. After several hours of travelling, it was dusk. So they brought out tents from their storage bags. Grey was also given a tent as well.

Although he was uncomfortable sleeping outside, since the other team members seemed to have no fear, why did he.

Tomorrow they continued their journey and in four hours, they had gotten to the corroded zone. The Captain took the lead as everyone followed from behind.

When they got to a particular place, Luo took the lead. Then in a few hours, Zuro took the lead. Everyone seemed to have knowledge of a particular part of the corroded zone to one extent.

Which made Grey's own knowledge seem shallow as they did not encounter any strong beasts at all.

He also noticed that each and every single one of them could have learnt the path to their destination. But they chose not to. It was because if their trust in one another that they decided to leave their Fate in the hands of their teammates.

Grey didn't know if that was wisdom, or foolishness. But he didn't care. He also knew that it meant they had to rely on one another to safely get out.

After the time it takes for a candle to burn out, everyone stopped at a big withered tree to catch their breath.

No one spoke anything as they all had solemn expressions on their faces. When they suddenly got to an unexplored canyon, they brought out their weapons and got in a fighting position.

Grey noticed the tense atmosphere and brought out his knife. He wished he had a better weapon like a dagger but unfortunately, he broke the dagger that the middle-aged cultivator used. He was starting to regret this now.

Under the tense atmosphere, everyone circulated their cultivation bases including Grey. Only the Captain seemed unperturbed but Grey knew that he was the most tense and concerned than all of them.

Suddenly his expression changed and let out a low shout.

"Get ready!"

After he said that, Grey had a loud growl resound in the canyon and he saw several black dots rushing at them from the distance.

He was still wondering what the black dots were when a shadow suddenly fell from above. But the Captain had already moved with a sword in his hand.

His slightly long hair was completely white as he brandished the white sword at the falling shadow. There was a dying groan and blood suddenly poured down.

When he looked up, he saw the captain's cold and Noble face as he looked at the approaching black dots with disdain.

He then lifted his hand and the sword in his had grew longer and turned to a long sword. With the sword pointing down, he rushed at the approaching black dots and the rest of the team followed.

Because Grey was the last, he did not see the Captain fighting but he saw the bodies of what he was killing.

They were wolves. Black steel wolves. He had seen these wolves before and although their cultivation base was not high, what made them truly fearful was the fact that they hunted in numbers.

When he saw the approaching black dots, finally his expression turned to fear and his face paled a bit.

'What in the corroded zones...'

He heard the clanging of steel against flesh and knew the Captain had already begun to clash with them.

The entire team went like an arrow piercing through the multitude of wolves. Under the loud clanging sounds, growls and howls of pain could be heard coming from wolves.

One of the wolves that had been cut open by the side was not yet dead and seeing Grey, it rushed out in fury and bloodlust despite its grevious injuries and tried to bite down on him.

It's black steeled back glittered a little despite the absence of light. Grey was a little slow to react, but a arrow suddenly fell out from nowhere and struck the wolf in its eye.

The power of the arrow was strong and the wolf reeled back because of the force. Grey turned and saw Luo holding her bow and already notching another arrow.

She nodded at him and continued to release arrow after arrow at the wolves.

'Dammit, I don't have any long ranged weapons.' After snapping out of his reverie, he noticed the problem at hand.

As if responding to his thoughts, a dagger was tossed over by Zuro. He was standing behind the Captain as he pounded the remaining wolves that had not died from the initial clash with the Captain.

Grey's expression was one of gratitude, but he couldn't thank him because his attention was brought to the wolves who had not yet died.

They looked at him with madness and bloodlust as they opened their mouths to bare their teeths and then lunged at him.

'It's time to show my worth...

Grey said as his eyes narrowed and he suddenly entered a state of clarity. He noticed every single detail of the advancing wolves. He was not distracted by anything and then moved in response.
