Chapter 13 – In Search of the Truth

Adrian gripped the map tightly, his fingers pressing against its edges as if trying to decipher the hidden secrets in the irregular lines and the worn marks of time. The soft light of the candle illuminated the paper, casting shadows that danced on the weathered wooden walls of their refuge. Each line on the map seemed to have its own story, a clue left by a lost man, an echo of a distant past.

"What do you think? Should we follow this map?" Adrian asked, breaking the silence that hung in the room.

Cordelia stood by the window, watching the sky darken. The fading light of dusk was slipping away, leaving only a blanket of darkness over the world outside. She turned, her eyes narrowing with suspicion.

"Are you out of your mind, Adrian? You want to follow the map of a dead man who thought he found a place with answers to our questions? This is madness!" The irritation in her voice was clear, and she crossed her arms, a defensive gesture against the idea Adrian was suggesting.

Adrian raised his hands in a gesture of calm, trying to convey some serenity to the growing tension.

"Just hear me out, okay?" The calm in his voice was firm, but there was a slight anxiety hidden in the words, an urgency he couldn't hide.

Cordelia took a deep breath, her thoughts clear but confused. She hesitated, her eyes fixed on the map and then on Adrian, before finally giving in to the weight of silence. "Alright... go ahead."

Adrian moved closer to the table, carefully unfolding the map. The table, made of simple wood and already marked by the wear of time, trembled slightly under Adrian's touch. He laid the map with precision, the faded ink almost disappearing under the weak light. The winding lines seemed like a network, but it was Adrian's clear proposal that finally caught her attention.

"Look, I know it sounds crazy. But if we just stay here, without direction, we're not getting out of this place, Cordelia," he said, his eyes fixed on the map. "The two of us alone will never be able to search for your parents in a domain as vast and fragmented as this one."

He pointed with his finger, drawing a soft line toward a marked area on the corner of the map. The line seemed almost mystical, a thread connecting uncertainty with hope.

"Look, our supplies won't last long enough for a random search. And this marked location might be our only chance to find something that can help us. Maybe there we can uncover more about the divine domain... or at least a clue about how it works."

Adrian straightened up, his eyes meeting Cordelia's. He knew she was right to be skeptical, but he also knew that aimlessly searching was more dangerous than any calculated risk.

"If we do nothing, we're just waiting for death. But if we follow this map, maybe we'll find something more... And, maybe, you'll find answers about your parents."

Cordelia turned her gaze to the map, her thoughts a whirlpool. What he was suggesting didn't feel right, but the emptiness of uncertainty seemed worse than any unknown path.

She bit her lower lip, feeling the weight of the options before her. "You might be right... but it's still a gamble. It's risky."

Adrian let out a low chuckle, not out of mockery but understanding. "What isn't risky in this place?" he replied, his voice carrying a melancholy only those who truly understood the cost of survival could feel. "This could be our chance. The chance to find answers to everything... the chance to understand how this place works."

Cordelia looked at him for a moment before finally sighing and averting her eyes, as if acceptance was the only path left.

"Yeah... if we keep wandering aimlessly, we'll die here without knowing anything. This is the best lead we've had so far."

Adrian smiled, a smile of relief that seemed to bloom on his face. It was the first sign of renewed confidence in his decision.

"So, you agreed?"

"Yes." She let out a brief laugh, but it was short. "What's the plan?"

Adrian took a deep breath, the weight of the moment settling in him. "The plan is simple. Tomorrow, we'll go to the nearest city and gather everything we can. Clothes, food... anything that can help us on the journey to the marked location on the map."

Cordelia raised an eyebrow, a playful look crossing her face. "At least you're not planning on running off into the unknown without a plan."

"Am I really that dumb to you?" Adrian said, surprise mixed with a touch of humor.

Cordelia laughed, the sound clear and pleasant, something Adrian hadn't heard since they first met. "A guy who just found a heritage map and wants to run off the next day without thinking about the consequences? Doesn't sound too smart," she teased.

Adrian looked at her with a genuine smile, feeling something he couldn't explain. The feeling of finally having someone to trust was comforting.

"It's the first time I've seen you laugh. You should laugh more," he said, his smile softening, a hint of vulnerability in his voice.

Cordelia turned and walked toward the makeshift bedroom, the lightness of her laugh still echoing off the walls. "And you should get some sleep. Tomorrow will be a long day. Go on, rest."

Adrian sat for a moment, looking at the cabin's ceiling, thoughts drifting back and forth. The wooden beams creaked softly, as if the house itself was tired, waiting for the next stage of the journey.

He closed his eyes slowly, allowing the thoughts to calm. "Mom... Dad... I'm getting closer to the inheritance. Soon, I'll know more about you."

With the silent promise of a future yet to come, he fell asleep, hope filling his dreams as the world around him sank into darkness.
