Alex stared at the check in disbelief.
Five million dollars.
This was the most money she had ever seen in her entire life. And here it was, sitting in front of her like it was a casual lunch receipt.
The paper looked crisp, clean, and completely surreal.
She didn't touch it.
"I'm not looking for compensation," She slid the cheque back to Helen without a second glance. "I was simply taking responsibility for what happened."
Helen merely glanced at the untouched cheque, then raised her gaze back to Alex with a hint of amusement in her eyes.
"This has nothing to do with responsibility. As I'm sure you've heard, my son is getting engaged soon. The last thing we need is a scandal. Especially one involving you."
Alex's expression hardened. "What are you trying to say?"
Helen shook her head, clicking her tongue, as if disappointed. "Tsk. I thought you were smarter than this."
