Kaelith lowered his head briefly, then let out a slow breath. His eyes rose again to meet mine. This time, they weren't as sharp as usual. Not as cold. But… still heavy.
"I'll tell you the real story. But only if you promise me one thing first."
I nodded slowly. "What is it?"
"Did Sylas tell you… that Nerina was arranged to be married to both of us by her family?"
I held my breath. Then nodded gently.
"Yes. He said Nerina was forced. That she was arranged to marry both of you."
Kaelith closed his eyes for a moment. "That much is true."
"Then…" he continued, his voice quieter now, but colder, "Did he also tell you… that neither of us killed Nerina on that wedding day?"
I quickly shook my head. "WHAT? No. Not at all."
His eyes narrowed.
