Chapter 49 - Chapter 49: Great Gains

"Come on, you bald middle-aged man, what's there to reminisce about?"

Sitting nearby, Asakawa Chisato taunted sarcastically.

"Exactly, looking like a misshapen melon, and you're still dwelling on the past."

A man further away joined in with a mocking laugh.

The middle-aged man being interrupted and ridiculed wasn't bothered at all. Instead, he smirked disdainfully. "Just the barking of a bunch of losers."

Silas found their bickering quite amusing.

Meanwhile, in the distance, energetic young girls were playing in the swimming pool and water park, occasionally glancing toward the fishing area. Their gazes frequently landed on a particularly handsome young man, making them giggle and playfully nudge each other.

"Whoosh—" Silas reeled in his fishing rod. A Qwilfish was hooked not bad, at least it wasn't a Magikarp.

With a simple gesture, his Pidgeot flapped its wings, sending the inflated Qwilfish flying back into the sea.

Silas turned toward an elderly man nearby and raised an eyebrow. "Old man, I just caught my first one today. You've been here longer than me, yet you haven't caught a single one."

"Hmph, you brat, I already caught plenty before you even arrived," the old man retorted.

The elderly man was dressed quite youthfully.

Silas chuckled. "By the way, old man, I never asked your name yesterday. What should I call you?"

"Rowan."

The old man—no, Rowan replied casually.

Silas fell silent for a moment.

Rowan seemed focused on fishing, not wanting to be outdone by a young boy.

Silas, however, was lost in thought after hearing that name.

The name and appearance reminded him of someone a younger version of a certain Pokémon Professor from the Sinnoh region in his previous life.

He soon chuckled to himself. What did it matter? He had been chatting with the old man just fine before knowing his identity.

He casually cast his fishing line again.

"Rowan... as in Professor Rowan, the one who studies evolution?" Silas asked, curious but not overly concerned. If a renowned Pokémon professor was right in front of him, learning something from him wouldn't be a bad idea.

"Yes," Rowan replied, glancing at Silas with slight surprise. "You know me?"

It was understandable why Rowan was surprised. At this point, his fame was nowhere near what it would be in the future.

While he had already published numerous papers on Pokémon evolution and was recognized as an authority in the field among researchers, his name wasn't widely known to regular trainers.

Most trainers only paid attention to new research findings, not the researchers behind them especially since Rowan was still affiliated with Professor Oak's research institute. His publications bore the institute's name, so casual trainers rarely remembered the actual author.

And yet, this young trainer knew of him.

"Yes, I've read your papers, On Eevee's Evolutionary Possibilities—Based on Genetic Instability, The Connection Between Evolutionary Forms, and The Complete Evolutionary State Hypothesis," Silas listed off smoothly.

Rowan nodded in acknowledgment. He had initially assumed Silas only recognized his name, but it turned out he genuinely understood his work.

Most people only cared about the first paper since it was widely discussed. The latter two were more academic and held little interest for trainers focused purely on battling.

Yet, this young man had read them all.

That meant he was truly passionate about learning.

"Oh? Then what are your thoughts after reading them?" Rowan asked, deciding to test Silas a little.

"Not many, just a few doubts," Silas replied.

"In your Complete Evolutionary State Hypothesis, you proposed that Pokémon might ultimately evolve into legendary beings like Ho-Oh and Lugia, reaching a conceptually perfect state. You used this theory to suggest that these legendary Pokémon might not have pre-evolutionary forms. I don't quite understand that part. If—"

Silas temporarily set aside his fishing, eager to take advantage of this rare opportunity to pick a professor's brain.

This knowledge could greatly aid his own research and deductions.

Rowan listened to Silas' question and nodded in satisfaction.

Silas' inquiries stemmed from genuine contemplation of the material, and his reasoning carried a personal touch. It was clear he had put effort into understanding the subject.

Finding a young trainer so interested in academic research was rare.Rowan was more than happy to provide detailed explanations.

After all, Pokémon Professors in this world were true scholars. Any professor officially recognized by the Pokémon League was required not only to have significant research achievements but also to meet high ethical standards.

That was why the League entrusted them with distributing starter Pokémon to young trainers.

Most of the time, they were more than willing to educate the younger generation.

And so, the young man and the old professor began a deep discussion on Pokémon evolution.

Other experienced trainers fishing nearby were chatting among themselves, occasionally glancing at Silas with admiration.

After all, no one disliked a hardworking, intelligent young man with a thirst for knowledge.

The discussion lasted two to three hours. Both of them were so immersed that they completely ignored their fishing rods, even when the lines twitched.

Having gone through a portion of his prepared questions, Silas decided to stop.

He had already gained a great deal from the conversation.

Their discussion had covered far more than just evolution having spent years at Professor Oak's research institute, Rowan had extensive knowledge on various topics.

"Do you have any more questions?" Rowan asked, his expression kind. He had grown increasingly fond of this young man over the past few hours.

"Not for now. I need some time to process everything; there's a lot to absorb," Silas admitted honestly.

Rowan nodded in approval.

Although he wouldn't have minded continuing the discussion, he appreciated Silas' ability to recognize his own limits.

Knowing when to stop was an uncommon trait greed was far more typical.

"Well, then, I'll be heading off for now. Sorry, everyone old man Rowan, and you all I'll be back tomorrow!" Silas said, getting up quickly. He was eager to return and organize all the knowledge he had just gained.

Before leaving, he exchanged contacts with several of the older trainers via his wrist device. Everyone was happy to add him as a friend.

As they watched him leave, someone sighed, "Young trainers like him are rare these days. Looks like Kanto is about to gain another prodigy from humble beginnings."

No one objected.

In their hearts, they all agreed.
