Alana's POV
I lay in my bed long after the sorcerer's words had echoed in my mind. The fire in the hearth crackled and popped, but I could barely hear it over the noise of my thoughts. I had come here for answers, but the weight of those answers was heavier than I'd imagined. A stranger ruled the land, and the land itself mourned. My mother had known, and the pain she had felt, the sorrow in her eyes and it was all because of him. The man who had taken everything from me.
How could I not have seen it? How could I have been so blind?
I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to push away the ache in my chest. The more I thought about the dream, the more I realized how trapped I was. How trapped everyone was. Pack rise to power hadn't been natural, and whatever had happened to him, whatever had turned him into the monster who now controlled this land, it wasn't over. The land would never heal as long as he remained in charge. And that meant that I couldn't afford to wait any longer.
