Vampires had the fastest healing ability of all the creatures in Havencrest. Both vampires and werewolves shared one fatal weakness—silver. But for werewolves, fire was the real nightmare. It burned deeper, slower, and left them with wounds that took forever to heal.
A look of horror twisted Nevian's face as he stared at the fire consuming parts of the building. Wails echoed through the hall, followed by the sound of glass breaking, people screaming, and feet pounding toward the exits.
When Nevian turned back to Kieran, the vampire was already gone. He hissed under his breath and bolted toward the building.

Valeska's ears rang, her palms clamped tightly over them from the shock of the explosion. Her face twisted in pain as she tried to block out the noise.
She had still been on the terrace—lost in thoughts about whether or not to speak to Nevian—when the blast shook the foundation beneath her feet.
Stumbling to her feet, Valeska rushed inside.
