Chapter 32 - Sin #9 — Mocking Others’ Scent or Smell

"Whoever mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker; whoever gloats over disaster will not go unpunished."

— Proverbs 17:5 (NIV)

There's a quiet cruelty that often hides in jokes, smirks, or whispered comments—mocking someone for how they smell. Whether it's due to poverty, health, culture, or lifestyle, when we turn our noses up at others or insult their odor, we reveal something foul in our own hearts: pride and cruelty.

To God, such mockery is not lighthearted—it's a direct offense against Him, because every human being is made in His image.

The Scent of Judgment

Sometimes, mocking someone's scent seems small. A laugh at a coworker's hygiene. A comment about a stranger on the bus. A cruel nickname in school. But every time we do it, we place ourselves in a position of superiority—as if our cleanliness makes us more valuable.

Jesus did the opposite. He embraced the leper. He walked among the poor. He allowed a "sinful woman" to pour out her perfume and wash His feet with her tears. He didn't recoil—He welcomed.

Mocking others over smell is more than rudeness. It's a rejection of mercy, and a symptom of spiritual pride.

"He who despises his neighbor sins, but blessed is he who is kind to the needy." — Proverbs 14:21

Application: Choose Compassion Over Contempt

Your nose may detect a scent—but your heart decides how you respond. Will you react with disgust, or with understanding? With mockery, or with compassion?

Ask yourself:

Have I ever made fun of someone for their scent or hygiene?

Do I treat others differently because of how they smell?

Am I willing to love people who carry pain or poverty?

God isn't asking for your comfort. He's asking for your compassion.

Prayer to Break Prideful Judgments

Lord, forgive me for every time I've judged or mocked someone based on outward things. Help me to see people through Your eyes, not my own preferences. Teach me to love without pride, and to extend grace where others extend shame. Make my heart as merciful as Yours. In Jesus' name, Amen.
