Chapter 36 - Sin #13 — Sniffing for Gossip or Trouble

"Without wood a fire goes out; without a gossip a quarrel dies down."

— Proverbs 26:20 (NIV)

Some people don't need to smell smoke—they're always sniffing for it. They carry a spiritual nose not for holiness, but for drama, secrets, and scandal. They want to be the first to hear, the first to share, the first to whisper. It's not just that they hear gossip—they hunt for it, as if the scent of sin in someone else's life makes their own feel less heavy.

This attitude reflects a deeper issue: a heart that delights in the fall of others, rather than mourning it.

Feeding the Fire with Your Curiosity

The Bible is clear—gossip is like fuel. Without someone to spread it, it dies. But when we lean in and ask questions, entertain suspicions, or click that tempting headline, we become part of the problem.

When your "nose" is trained to sniff out others' faults, you stop guarding your own soul. Gossip dulls your sensitivity to grace and increases your appetite for judgment.

"The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to the inmost parts." — Proverbs 18:8

What you feast on will eventually shape you.

Application: Train Your Senses for Peace

God calls us to be peacemakers, not detectives of dysfunction. The mature believer turns away from the scent of gossip, not toward it. Instead of delighting in others' messes, we grieve over sin and pray for restoration.

Ask yourself:

Do I enjoy hearing or uncovering drama?

Do I seek out the private failures of others?

Do I turn rumors into conversations, or prayers?

Your nose should lead you to intercession—not interference.

Prayer to Silence the Gossip Spirit

Father, forgive me for the times I've chased gossip instead of truth. I don't want to feast on the faults of others or fuel the fire of division. Teach me to protect what is sacred, to speak only what builds up, and to grieve sin—not gossip about it. Let my words and motives be pure. In Jesus' name, Amen.
