The car ride was smooth, without any troubles, without any worries in Joseph's mind that what he might have done was going to cause a lot of trouble… that it's going to explode a bomb in the heart of the criminal underworld. It was more like that he exactly understood what he had done, what his actions would do, but why would he care for it?
There is nobody in the world who loves him, or that chains him, so dying is just a quick way out from all the struggles… he really didn't give a single fuck about his life.
"It changed a lot, right?" Pablo asked as they arrived back at the city and saw Joseph glued to the window.
"Yeah… everything changed so much." He said all around were skyscrapers, big apartment buildings, but his attention was also caught by the cars, the people outside, their clothes, dresses, their smiles on their faces.
It truly changed. Back when he was out, it was more like the wild west. The roads were all fucked, there weren't big skyscrapers, only one or two that were owned by some criminals and the people were scared to go outside, even to go to work. Back then, the streets, the whole city, was ruled by the criminals, by his father and the alliance.
Every single business, every single bar, restaurant, shop, was paying money to the alliance just to let them keep operating, so much money that half of them went bankrupt in the first two months. Not just that, but the cops, everybody was in their hands. The fucking city was their playground. Without any consequences, they could do whatever they just wanted, and the government said nothing because they had bigger problems… a war in a country so far that some people didn't even knew that country exist… but the government felt the need to join in and spend billions of taxpayer money, to let thousands of soldiers die for nothing.
But maybe that was the best decision because it just caused more outrage, caused more protest, and more cracks in the government, in the leadership of it and the final blow that broke the whole thing was caused by Joseph or more like the DAG because with the death of his parents and the alliance everything changed and just got out of hand. The chaos raged, everybody snitched on everybody, files and documents leaked, everything was out there for the public, and it just fueled them more. That's when the democratic party was formed, and with more fighting, more mass protests, eventually the system fell.
Of course it wasn't just because of Joseph or the DAG, but because the people truly had enough, millions of them. It was more like a revolution, they clashed with police, with national guards, even with soldiers and criminals. The general public clashed with all of them, and in the end, they won.
"That agent, Olivia, said to me that the whole system changed, that this country is democratic and functions well… is it true?" Joseph asked as he looked at Pablo, and he just smiled.
"To be truthful, over the ten years they've done an excellent job, almost unbelievable things. They tripled the minimum wage, they reformed healthcare, invited foreign manufacturing into the country to give more jobs to the people, and the list just goes on."
"But?" Joseph asked for a because in Pablo's voice there was the hint that something went wrong on the way.
"There is not a single human on the face of the earth who would look at a spreadsheet with hundreds of billions just floating in the air and wouldn't touch it." He laughed. "The last government members dipped out of the country, but they left the majority of their wealth here because of sanctions and other things… well, they thought they would rule forever." He glanced at Joseph. So just imagine, the new government sees this money, that is already cleared money, has no connection to the government and even the public doesn't even know about it."
"So they touched it." Joseph said, and well, it was true. Even he would have touched it especially when there's nothing to do with it, no need to launder it or channel it through shell companies like his father did.
"Yeah, they did. But how should I say it… ethically, maybe."
"Ethically stealing?"
"They seized all the assets of our last government, from the president to the lowest-ranked government members, luxury cars, jewelry, watches, private jets, yachts, everything you can think of, and sold it all off. The money came back with that, that was what they actually stole." Pablo looked at Joseph and saw that he didn't really understand it. "The money in those accounts was unbelievable, too much and they knew if they didn't channel it back to the government, and start rebuilding the country, then they weren't going to last long, nor the country itself. So they switched it, they channeled the money back and stole what they sold."
"This is too much, Pablo…" Joseph said. "My mind can't process all the information you're saying, so… just simply, they stole it and they're corrupt, yeah?"
"Well, simply yes. But they're also genius in a way."
Every single government is corrupt, of course they are. The biggest mafia, and everyone knows it… he thought as he closed his eyes.
"How corrupt are they now?" He asked next.
"Actually, they only stole in the beginning. Now, they're cracking down on their own operations. So yeah, I'd say they can be corrupt… if you've got the right information on them." Pablo and his voice laced with implication, as if he were hinting at something Joseph should pick up on.
"So… who do we have?"
"To be truthful with you… we only built the foundation. There isn't anything in place. We're not dealing drugs, nor doing anything like that. We lived off for ten years on the money that you gave us… but we used it to at least have some defense on our side." He explained with proudness in his voice. "We have the Police Chief in our hands, as well as the Minister of Justice and some higher ranking agents. So if they launch an investigation, which they will now eventually do, we will know about every detail, so we can act accordingly."
Ministers and the Chief… how many life sentences is that… more like execution and I'm the mastermind of it or at least I'm going to be in the headlines… the Cassian family is back.
"You know what, Pablo, I don't want to hear names, positions, and numbers… I just want to sleep a bit, okay?" He turned to him, and well, Pablo nodded to it, because he realized it might have been too much info dumped on Joseph, who just got kidnapped and beaten.
So he did exactly that and just stayed silent, while Joseph just simply started snoozing like nothing special happened.
Just another day, like he didn't just hear that they begged a minister and the police chief.
