The air in the compound grew heavy.
Even the birds in the mango tree paused mid-chirp.
Temi stared at the envelope in Mama Dorcas' trembling hands.
> "That symbol…"
Her voice was dry. "It's from my mother's secret diary."
"Secret what?" Baba Tunde choked.
"A diary she hid… locked… for years. Only members of the Society could read it." Her fingers tightened around the envelope. "They called themselves the Triangle Eyes."
Madam Eunice's head snapped up. "Triangle Eyes?"
"You know it," Mama Dorcas said coldly. "Don't pretend."
Temi looked between them. "Wait—what kind of society was it?"
"They weren't witches," Mama Dorcas snapped, too quickly. "They were… protectors. Women who handled dangerous secrets. Family curses. Land disputes. Spiritual warfare."
Uncle Monday whistled. "Na that kind club I go join when I die."
Femi raised a brow. "So you're saying both of you—your mothers—were part of this cult?"
"It's not a cult!" Mama Dorcas and Madam Eunice barked at the same time.
Temi blinked. "Then what is it?"
"A society that no longer exists," Mama Dorcas said slowly. "Or so we thought."
She turned the envelope over. Behind it was a name.
> Dorcas Akinwande-Eunice Consortium.
Temi gasped. "Wait… your mothers worked together?"
"They were sworn sisters," Madam Eunice murmured. "Until a ritual went wrong in 1979."
A sudden breeze blew through the window and snuffed out Mama Yakubu's kerosene stove.
She screamed from the backyard, "Jesus! Somebody don blow powder again!"
---
Back in the parlour...
Mama Dorcas slowly opened the envelope.
Inside: A folded paper. Yellow with age. Ink smudged, but still readable.
The header read:
> "When the Red Bag Is Reopened, The Daughter Must Finish What The Mothers Began."
Temi blinked. "The daughter?"
Madam Eunice turned to her. "It means you."
"Me? Abeg, I no sabi ritual. I barely passed CRK!"
Mama Dorcas looked at Temi with the most serious eyes she'd ever seen.
"It's you, Temi. The signs are aligning. You're the only one left who carries both bloodlines. The triangle has chosen."
Temi took a step back. "No. I just wanted to marry Femi and eat chin chin in peace."
Uncle Monday cleared his throat. "I told you people. This family is a Netflix series."
---
Suddenly, Femi's phone buzzed again.
New voice note. Unknown number.
He pressed play.
> "You opened the bag. Good. Now meet me at the old well behind St. James Cemetery. Midnight. Come alone. Or the diary goes public."
Silence.
"Who was that?" Temi whispered.
Nobody answered.
Mama Dorcas walked to the door and locked it from inside.
Then turned around.
"We don't have a choice."
> "It's time to wake the Other Mothers."
