Kael's POV.
I stood close to the bed, my heart pounding, my eyes locked on the cup of tea in my hand. The liquid was dark, murky, with a sharp smell that stung my nose, nothing like the herbal tea it was supposed to be.
Aria stood by the nightstand, her silver gown dirty from the Fang Pack fire, her blue eyes wide with fear.
The maid, her hands trembling, her face pale, was inching toward the door, like she could slip away unnoticed.
My wolf, Zeus, growled low, his senses screaming danger. This tea, this maid; something was wrong, and I wasn't letting it touch my mate.
"Have you tasted this?" I asked, my voice low, my eyes flicking to Aria.
She shook her head, her hands shaking, her breath quick.
Relief hit me, but it was short, my anger rising as I turned to the maid. She bowed low, her tray rattling, and tried to slip out, her steps quick, desperate.
