Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Aftermath

As we left the pharmacy, I felt a mix of emotions: relief, guilt, and uncertainty. The silence between us was palpable, each of us lost in our own thoughts. I glanced over at Danielle,, wondering if she was processing the events at the pharmacy the same way I was.

Nick on the other hand, seemed unfazed. He walked ahead of us, his eyes scanning for any signs of danger. His calm demeanor was both reassuring and unnerving.

We loaded up the truck with as many supplies as we could carry, our goal accomplished. "Let's get back to the bus terminal," Nick said, his voice matter-of-fact. "We can figure out our next move."

I nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. the bus terminal would be a safe haven, a place to regroup and plan our next step. Danielle nodded too, her eyes fixed on the supplies.

As we drove back through the desert street, the silence between us grew thicker. I knew we needed to talk about what had happened, but I wasn't sure where to start. Nick's lack of reaction had thrown me off balance.

For now, we drove in silence, the only sound the hum of the truck's engine and the wind rustling through the desert landscape. Our destination was in sight, and I knew that once we had arrived, we'd have time to process everything that had happened.

We arrived at the bus terminal, and I felt a mix of emotions as I gazed out at the familiar structure. The tension between us was palpable, and I knew Danielle and I were both wondering about Nick's reaction to killing the man at the pharmacy.

As we settled in and secured the area, Danielle turned to Nick. "Nick, what's going on?" She asked, her voice low and serious. "You're acting like killing that guy didn't faze you at all. What happened back there?"

Nick's expression was neutral, but I could see a hint of something in his eyes. "I've just been surviving for a long time," he said. "After I got trapped and separated from you two, I was on my own for six months. Every day was a fight for survival. Zombies, hostile survivors...I had to do whatever it took to stay alive."

"What do you mean?" Danielle asked, her voice soft.

Nick's eyes seemed to cloud over, and his voice dropped to a whisper. "I was trying to stay away, to keep the zombies away from you and keep you two safe. But being on my own for so long...it changes you. I lost count of the days, the weeks, the months. I just tried to survive. But I didn't lose everything, because I have you two. Dylan, you're my brother, my best friend. We've been through too much together. 'Love you, bro' wasn't just a phrase, it was a promise. And Danielle, you're like family too. The three of us, we're all we've got left."

I felt a lump form in my throat as Nick's word hit home. It was true, we'd been like brothers since high school, and Danielle had always been a part of our crew.

"I don't feel much of anything anymore," Nick said, his voice flat. "It's just another day, another survival. I've seen so much death and destruction...it just doesn't faze me like it used to. But having you two...that's what kept me going. We're in this together, and we'll get through it together."

The silence that followed was oppressive, each of us grappling with the weight of Nick's words. I looked at him differently now, my mind racing with questions and doubts. What had he gone through during those six months? How had he managed to survive? But most importantly, I knew no matter what, we'd face it together as a family.

As we stood there, lost in thought, the silence was suddenly shattered by the sound of groaning and shuffled footsteps. We turned to see a horde of the larger, stronger zombies shambling towards us, their eyes fixed on us with a mindless hunger. These were the ones we'd encountered when we found Nick, the ones that seemed almost...evolved.

"Time to stand our ground," Nick said, his voice firm and decisive. He raised his gun and took aim at the lead zombie. "Let's see how many of these fuckers we can take down."

We stood back-to-back, our guns blazing as we took down zombie after zombie. The larger zombies were tougher to kill, but we managed to take down a few with precise shots to the head.

However, as the horde kept coming, it became clear that we were outnumbered. The zombies just kept coming, their numbers seemingly endless.

"Fall back!" I yelled, my voice firm. "There's too many."

Nick nodded, his eyes scanning the area for an escape route. "We gotta make a run for it," he said. "We can't hold out much longer."

We continued to fight, taking down as many zombies as we could, but it was clear that we were fighting a losing battle. The zombies just kept coming, and we were starting to get tired.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, we realized that we had to retreat. We turned and ran, the horde of zombies hot on our heels. We burst through the door and slammed it shut behind us, trapping the zombies on the other side. Their groans and growls became muffled by the thick metal door.

"Let's go, move, move, move!" I yelled, grabbing Danielle's hand and pulling her towards the truck. "We need to get out of here."

We sprinted towards the truck, our footsteps echoing off the walls. The zombies would break through the door soon, and we needed to be long gone by then.

We reached the truck and piled in, slamming the doors shut behind us. I started the engine and put it in gear, peeling out of the parking lot as the zombies burst out of the door and gave chase.

We sped away from the bus terminal, leaving the horde of zombies in the dust. For a moment, we just breathed a sigh of relief, grateful to have escaped.

But as we drove, I had a feeling that the danger wasn't over yet. We still had to find a safe place to stay, and we had to figure out what to do next. The road ahead of us was uncertain, but we were determined to survive, no matter what.
