The Marker lunged at us with sudden speed, its eyes fixed on Danielle. I pushed her behind me, my knife flashing in the dim light. Nick reacted quickly, taking out another Marker that had been hiding in the shadows.
"Fall back!" I shouted, as more Markers emerged from the darkness, their eyes glowing with an unnatural hunger.
We retreated down the hallway, fighting off the Markers as they attacked. I could feel Danielle's fear radiating from behind me, but she was holding her own, staying close and not panicking.
As we fought, I realized that we were being pushed towards the stairwell. The Markers were herding us, trying to drive us towards a more vulnerable position.
"Nick, we need to get to the cells!" I should above the din of the fight. "We can't let them push us down the stairs!"
Nick yelled back in agreement, and we fought our way back towards the safety of our cells. But as we reached the door, I realized that we might not be able to hold out for much longer...
The Markers were relentless, and I could feel our defenses starting to crumble.
We barricaded ourselves inside the cell, slamming the door shut behind us. As soon as we were safely inside, we each grabbed the gun we had stashed in our cells for emergencies.
"We'll take care of the rest of them," I said, my voice firm.
Nick and Danielle nodded, and we aimed our guns through the iron bars of the cell door. The Markers were still clawing and screaming on the other side trying to get in.
We opened fire, the sound of gunfire echoing down the hallway as we took out the Markers one by one. The noise was intense, but it was effective. Soon, the Markers were lying motionless on the floor, and the hallway was quiet once again.
As the last Marker fell, we stopped firing and leaned against the ceel door, exhausted. I looked at Nick and Danielle, checking to make sure they were okay.
"That was close," Nick said, his voice shaking slightly.
Danielle nodded, her eyes still wide with fear. "Let's not do that again anytime soon."
I smiled grimly. "I'll try my best."
