Chapter 57 - Chapter 56: The Line That Breaks the Silence

Egypt — January 6, 1942

—You'll lead the front.

The sentence hung for a moment in the command tent, as if still looking for a place to land.

Falk didn't ask why.He didn't need to. His platoon had already proven its worth. Now, they'd pay with sweat, smoke, and loss.

**

Outside, the sand trembled beneath engines. The offensive was ready. The Axis lines would move along three routes: a central thrust, a supporting flank… and a mobile spearhead, tasked with breaking through, exposing enemy positions, and holding until reinforcements arrived.

Falk led that spearhead.

**

—We're made for this, right? —Helmut murmured while adjusting his headset.

—No. But we keep doing it anyway —Konrad replied.

—I'll keep doing it until I've got no hands left —added Ernst, loading the first shell.

Falk listened in silence. He just reviewed the map one more time. The objective: to break the British line east of El Imayid, a fortified fallback position.

**

At 08:40 hours, Falk's Panzer IV rolled out at the head of the formation.Behind him, four more tanks followed in his wake.To the flanks, mechanized infantry and Italian vehicles moved cautiously.

The desert was no longer just dust.It was tension. It was the echo of engines. It was a numberless clock counting down to the inevitable.

**

The resistance appeared just beyond a low rise.Three antitank guns opened fire at once.

—Defensive fire! Covering arc! —Falk ordered.

His voice came through clear, strong. As if the weight of Krause now guided him.

The offensive had begun. And the spear… was already driving in.
