Chapter 56 - Chapter 55: No One Names Them, But Everyone Feels Them

Egypt — January 5, 1942

The march resumed at dawn. The sun felt colder. Or maybe it was just the memory of what they had left behind.

The platoon advanced in formation. The engines roared with strength. The road to Alexandria remained open… but not untouched.

The gap in the formation was obvious. Not because a tank was missing, but because the rhythm was gone.

**

Inside the Panzer, no one spoke more than necessary.

—Secure frequency —Helmut said.

—Pressure steady —added Ernst.

—Route clear. No recent tracks —Konrad.

And Falk, up front, listened.Answered with gestures. And thought of Krause.

It wasn't his fault. He knew that. But it wasn't distant either. That loss was his now. As would be every one that followed.

**

During a brief refueling stop, Lukas leaned against the side of the Panzer. Smoking quietly.

—Never really liked him much —he said suddenly—.But he was a good driver. And he didn't deserve that.

Falk nodded.

—None of us do. And we all know it.—It was just easier to ignore before.

**

A few meters away, the new members of the platoon spoke in hushed tones. No one raised their voice. No one joked.

They were already different. Not because of what they had lived through. But because of what they had lost.

**

As the column resumed movement, Falk glanced at the empty spot in the line.Where Krause's tank should've been. And he knew that, even if they filled that space with another vehicle, it would never truly be occupied again.

**

And so he thought, eyes fixed on the horizon:

—There will be more losses. More names. More fires. But this was the first. And this will be the one that weighs on me every time I give an order.

**

The column rolled on.So did the war.And Falk... was no longer the same.
