Chapter 12: The Cards That Can Represent Yu-Gi-Oh!
"Huh, Hayato, are you buying Cards?" Yugi noticed that Hayato was buying Single Cards instead of Card Packs. "Isn't buying Card Packs more cost-effective than buying Single Cards you pull? And the Cards Grandpa has here aren't really strong either..."
"Seriously, what kind of grandson constantly tears down his grandpa's business?" Although Grandpa Sugoroku was old, he was in good health, and Yugi hadn't lowered his voice, so he heard everything clearly.
However, he couldn't refute Yugi's words. Most of the Cards displayed here were acquired from others' discarded Cards. While they weren't all things that completely polluted the Card Pool like "Larva Moth" or "Frog the Jam" if put in a Deck, most were just fodder Cards with around 1000+ ATK, with few worth buying.
Unless there was a Duelist who was a fervent fan of the "Sole Designated God" - "Mystical Elf". At least there were several "Mystical Elf" Cards displayed in the counter here.
"No, I'm not buying Monster Cards," Hayato waved his hand and pointed to a few Cards placed in the corner of the counter. "Grandpa Sugoroku, I'll take these few Cards. Oh, and these few too."
"What Cards did you pick, Hayato? Uh... why did you pick these Cards? Will these Cards really be useful?" Jonouchi held a few Card Packs in his hand, not opening them immediately, but instead leaned closer to Hayato, wanting to see what kind of Cards he had chosen.
He had thought that Cards that could catch the eye of Hayato, this "powerful Duelist," would be powerful Monsters. But unexpectedly, what Hayato got from Grandpa Sugoroku were just a few weak Monster Cards and Spell Cards that looked useless at first glance.
"Don't underestimate these Cards, Jonouchi. Every Card has its unique purpose," Hayato held three Monster Cards in one hand and shook them towards Jonouchi. "Don't look at how weak they seem now; their power can be very strong when they unite."
"I really can't imagine what's so great about Monsters with 0 ATK," Jonouchi squinted as he looked at the three Cards in Hayato's hand. "Besides, they're so ugly."
Hayato smiled and didn't explain the use of the three Cards in his hand to Jonouchi. After all, as Single Cards, they could indeed be called "Useless Cards".
These three Cards were -
"Ojama Yellow," "Ojama Green," and "Ojama Black"!
Without exception, all three Monsters were Beast-Type, LIGHT Attribute, 2☆ Normal Monsters, with identical Stats of 0/1000.
An ATK of 0 meant that even if the opponent did nothing and let the three Monsters Attack freely for three days and three nights, their Life Points (LP) wouldn't decrease by even a single point.
However, the three Cards collectively shared a well-known "Ojama" Archetype. Having an Archetype basically meant the existence of Support Cards, and their strength was vastly different from other scattered Cards without an Archetype. But without Support Cards...
Well, they were Useless Cards. The reason Hayato bought them was simply because in his previous life, he quite liked the character in the anime who used an "Ojama" Deck. However, that character's appearance might still be several years away.
Putting away the three "Ojama" Monsters, Hayato looked at the other few Cards he had purchased together, a hint of regret on his face. He couldn't help but ask Grandpa Sugoroku, "Grandpa Sugoroku, is there really only one 'Pot of Greed' here?"
What Hayato bought was precisely the "Pot of Greed," a Card that was almost universally held by characters in the anime but was banned early in the Real Card Environment due to its powerful effect of unconditionally drawing two Cards. He also bought the equally frequent Forbidden/Limited List residents, "Graceful Charity," which draws three and discards two, and the anime-effect version of "Card Destruction."
Among them, "Card Destruction" and "Graceful Charity" were available in quantities of three, but only "Pot of Greed" had just one, which made Hayato quite regretful. Also, Cards like "Monster Reborn" and "Painful Choice" were not sold at Kame Game Store.
"That's because nobody usually wants to buy a Card like 'Pot of Greed'," Yugi explained. "The one you bought, Hayato, was just put there because Grandpa likes collecting things. But 'Pot of Greed' isn't some powerful Rare Card, is it? It's quite common. If you need it, Hayato, I'll give it to you if I pull another 'Pot of Greed' in the future."
"Really? Yugi, you're so kind." Hayato now felt like leaning back in satisfaction. What did you call a top-tier best friend? That was Yugi.
Of course, that was before Yugi started leaning towards Trap-Heavy Decks.
Jonouchi and Honda had each opened their Card Packs and were sharing with each other. Seeing how lively they were opening packs, Hayato couldn't resist and bought a few Card Packs as well. As expected, he didn't pull any extremely powerful Cards, but there were a few Cards whose strength was decent, at least stronger than Hayato's original Card Pile, and worth adding to his Deck.
Jonouchi and Hayato adjusted the strength of their Decks together. Because Decks had a 40-Card limit, both of them had many extra Cards. These Cards weren't wasted; Honda completely took them and actually managed to put together a Deck of his own.
Of course, it was just a Deck; its strength could be said to be non-existent. Let alone comparing it to Yugi's or Hayato's, even Jonouchi's Deck was stronger than his.
Just as the few of them were immersed in the fun of Duel Monsters Card Trading, the door of the Toy Shop opened again. Grandpa Sugoroku subconsciously called out, "Welcome! Kame Game Store, we sell Duel Monsters Cards... Huh? Domino High School uniform?"
Hearing Grandpa Sugoroku's words, the few of them turned their heads to look at the door. The person who opened the door, just as Grandpa Sugoroku saw, was wearing a Domino High School uniform, and Hayato and the others all knew this person.
"Kaiba?"
"Is this Mutou Yuugi's family's Toy Shop?" Kenjiro Tsuda's magnetic voice came, making one can't help but want to say, "Blue-Eyes White Dragon Attack Brunhilde." Kaiba Seto looked around the room, frowning, and asked in confirmation, "Are you selling Duel Monsters Cards here?"
"So, Kaiba, you play Duel Monsters Cards too," Jonouchi casually struck up a conversation with Kaiba. "That's great! Now we have one more friend."
"Friend? Hmph, you seem to have misunderstood something, you mere Mediocre Person." Kaiba listened to Jonouchi's words but still kept a cold face. "Don't be ridiculous. Do guys like you have the qualifications?"
"What did you say!?" Jonouchi's expression was very unpleasant. Although Honda often called him an "Idiot" and "Idiot," that was because their relationship was very good, and such terms were closer to nicknames between them, without much derogatory meaning.
Speaking of Cards that can represent Yu-Gi-Oh!, it's definitely Pot of Greed.
For anime fans, the protagonists used Pot of Greed to turn the tables again and again.
For Real Card players, this is probably the Card they most hope to see released from the Forbidden/Limited List.
