Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The Legendary Employee of Hogwarts, Professor Binns

"Ah, this..." Upon hearing this, Madam Pomfrey was stunned for quite a while, and only then hesitantly said, "Doing this doesn't really cause any major problem to the body, it's just that I don't know if Snape would be willing."

"Then I'll trouble you, Madam Pomfrey, to help me pass along the message," Link immediately said. "By the way, do you have any food here? Because of the sleeping potion Professor Snape gave me, I slept for a long time and haven't had dinner yet."

"Oh, there's still some of that honey cake from last time."

"Then I won't be polite, thank you."

———

Half an hour later, Link finally left the infirmary under Madam Pomfrey's watchful gaze.

The suspicion, wariness, and unease born in his heart because of Snape's strange potion had also vanished completely under the comfort of the honey cake and Madam Pomfrey.

Just like said before, Madam Pomfrey is someone worthy of trust. In matters like this, she absolutely wouldn't lie to Link. Even if there are things she doesn't want to tell him, she would choose silence instead of using lies to comfort him.

Since she said the potion doesn't harm the body, and even might produce a beneficial effect, then Link would drink it, after all, it's free gain.

And as for the earlier proposal to let Snape drink it together with him, it was actually just for some psychological comfort and to take revenge on Snape a bit.

After all, a safeguard like "I drink however much you drink" in reality doesn't offer even the slightest bit of protection.

You must know, Snape is a potions master and a powerful wizard. If he wanted to play tricks with this, it would be far too easy.

Of course, the so-called peace of mind Link now felt was merely a temporary sigh of relief.

Because according to Madam Pomfrey, he seemed to still have some kind of problem with his body.

And this problem could very well be the real cause of the original owner's death, thus allowing Link to take his place.

Link didn't know whether this problem had disappeared when his soul arrived. If it hadn't, then this unknown issue might jump out at some future time and deal him a heavy blow.

It's just that this matter clearly isn't something Link can solve now, so he might as well put it aside for the time being.

Thinking so, Link returned directly to his dormitory.

At this moment, his roommates had long entered dreamland. But strangely, there was still a candle lit on Link's bedside table.

Frowning, Link approached, only to find that besides the candle, there was also a bowl of already-cold roasted sausages and fries on the cabinet, as well as a piece of parchment.

With the dim glow of the candle, Link read through the immature handwriting and finally understood.

Turns out this food was specially saved by John, who realized Link didn't come for dinner.

Link turned to look at John, who was on the top bunk kicking his quilt, and couldn't help but smile.

The night passed without words. When Link woke up again, it was already the morning of the next day.

Because he had already taken a nap in Snape's office earlier, Link tossed and turned in bed for quite a while last night before he finally fell asleep.

Even so, his powerful biological clock still woke him up at dawn.

Of course, the cost of sleep deprivation was obvious, his spirit was sluggish.

Luckily, this morning's class wasn't the strict Potions or Transfiguration, but the relatively easy History of Magic.

The professor of this subject, Binns, was the only ghost professor in all of Europe.

It's said that he was already teaching History of Magic when Hogwarts was founded. Back then, he was still alive, though already very old, so old that his memory had clearly deteriorated. He often forgot things, even frequently forgot to bring his lesson plans to class.

This kind of condition obviously wasn't suitable for continuing to teach students. At that time, the Headmaster of Hogwarts was indeed considering making Professor Binns retire.

Unfortunately, there were too few people truly proficient in magical history, and those few didn't want to teach at Hogwarts. The Headmaster was troubled by this for a long time.

Fortunately, one day, after Professor Binns again forgot to bring something to class, the Headmaster was no longer troubled.

Because this time, the thing Binns forgot to bring was his own body.

That's right, he died.

And it seemed he forgot that he had already died, and thus turned into a ghost.

It's worth mentioning that even though he forgot he was dead, he still didn't forget his duty, to teach students. Such a great sense of responsibility really scared the students at the time.

But the Headmaster back then clearly didn't think it was a bad thing. He happily announced the appointment of Professor Binns as Hogwarts' lifetime professor, and even held a celebration party for it.

With ill intent, Link speculated that the Headmaster was so happy because Professor Binns no longer needed to be paid after dying.

Having such an employee who never tires, never complains, and doesn't need a salary, what leader wouldn't be thrilled?

Of course, none of this could erase the fact that Professor Binns was a great teacher. A teacher who teaches others history eventually becoming history himself, that's got to be considered a poetic thing.

So, with respect for the most dedicated professor in history, Link arrived early at the classroom to wait for class to begin.

And then reality slapped Link in the face.

This so-called History of Magic class had barely gone ten minutes before all of Link's respect for Professor Binns vanished.

Because Professor Binns' teaching style was extremely dull and rigid. He didn't interact with the students at all, just floated in front of the lectern, mechanically reciting the lesson script.

What's more, he spoke in a wheezy, dragging tone, like a distant lullaby, making one drowsy.

The students attending the class were clearly already used to his way of teaching. Many of them outright ignored him, some secretly doing other things, some directly falling asleep.

John was a typical example. Although Link had slapped him awake before leaving the dormitory, he'd obviously had the quilt gremlin sealed again, only barely making it to class at the very last moment.

And even after arriving, John still wasn't fully awake. He only briefly greeted Link, then lay on the desk and continued snoring as if no one else were there.

This left Link speechless.

But Professor Binns didn't mind at all, he just kept droning on with his half-year-unchanged lecture script.

Poor Link was already low on energy. With such a powerful lullaby aiding him, how could he resist? After struggling for a bit longer, confirming that Professor Binns really wouldn't interfere, he followed John's example and entered dreamland.

And with that, Link slept through the whole morning.
