98 AC – The Last Tides of Boyhood
Readiness Is a Crown in Waiting
Before the prince leaves Dragonstone, every tie is tested — every step, measured. Brotherhood, blood, and duty take shape as Aegon prepares for the trials of King's Landing.
Brothers on the Road
In the final moons before departure, Aegon gathers his closest companions for the journey.
Benjen Stark, his northern shadow and equal in age, lacks the prince's physical might but remains steadfast and thoughtful — he too will travel to King's Landing.
Gael Targaryen, returning to court after years in Dragonstone, has bloomed into a poised and perceptive young princess. Her affection for Aegon and Benjen is unmistakable, and her place by their side feels inevitable.
Borros Baratheon, the storm-blooded squire of the group, is two years younger than Aegon but with a frame that matches Benjen's — and, under Ryam Redwyne's fierce instruction, perhaps even exceeds it in force. He too rides for the capital.
Aegon entrusts the training of his Firebound Brotherhood to captains handpicked by Lord Corlys Velaryon and Ser Ryam. These boys, aged 8 to 12, are forged not only for war — but for unwavering loyalty. In the years to come, Aegon intends that he, Benjen, or Borros will always be near their command.
"The lions await," Aegon says. "You three are not just my brothers — you're the roar that shakes their pride, and the shield that bears my flame."
The Velaryon Sisters Return
At the king's request, Rhaenys Velaryon and her daughter Laena arrive from Driftmark to join Aegon's journey to the capital.
Laena, proud and bright, is formally acknowledged again as Aegon's intended. Though only four years old, her presence brings a needed vitality to the family. Aegon adores his young betrothed, watching with warmth as she laughs and rides with fearless joy. He does not yet speak of love — but he sees in her the fire that may one day match his own.
Aenarion's Wings
Aegon spends more and more time with Aenarion, the young dragon bound to him by blood and fate. Under supervision, the first flights are attempted — small glides, hoverings, leaps. The bond strengthens.
"He waits for me," Aegon says. "As if he knows where I'll take him."
Dragon and boy grow together — and soon, one will carry the other.
The Body of a Prince
At just ten years old, Aegon's physique is that of a youth six years older — lean muscle, hardened hands, and a posture forged in sweat and fire. His hair is kept short, his steps firm.
He often stands apart from the others now, not in arrogance — but in solitude. Jocelyn Velaryon, once a watchful mother, grows distant. Grief and age have softened her voice. Aegon watches her with quiet concern.
"You've given me all you had," he tells her. "Now let me carry the flame."
He plans to ask her to go to Driftmark, to find peace among her kin, once they reach the capital.
