Chapter 36 - Chapter 33: A Universe Reduced to Two

The sun began its slow descent, painting the sky with strokes of orange and pink as Brianna already splashed in the pool, her laughter echoing in the quiet afternoon air. I sat on the edge, slowly taking off my t-shirt, when Josephine appeared through the door leading to the garden.

My breath hitched. It was the first time I had seen her in a swimsuit. The dark blue two-piece highlighted the delicacy of her pale skin, the soft curve of her shoulders, and the slender line of her back. A pang of surprise and a sudden heat washed over me as I contemplated this unexpected vision. I had never seen her that way, so... exposed, and the simple beauty of her figure left me momentarily speechless.

My God, I thought, feeling a lurch in my stomach. It was as if a part of her that had always been veiled was revealed for the first time, intensifying the attraction I already felt. The way the twilight caressed her skin, the subtle sparkle in her eyes as she approached the pool... everything contributed to a new, almost dizzying sensation.

"Jo, you finally made it! The water's delicious!" Brianna exclaimed from the pool, playfully splashing her. Josephine smiled shyly and stopped at the edge, hesitating for an instant before dipping a toe into the water. Her gaze met mine, and I felt a slight blush rise on her cheeks. I quickly looked away, feeling my own face redden as well. The intensity of my reaction to seeing her had taken me by surprise.

Brianna, ever observant, whistled softly. "Wow, Juliet, but that blue really suits you. Romeo can't take his eyes off you, can he, lovebird?" Her comment, said with a mischievous smile, made the blush on Josephine's cheeks deepen, and I felt my own heat increase.

I dove into the water to try to hide my embarrassment, the coolness acting like a slight shock. "The water's perfect, Jo. Aren't you coming in?" I asked, trying to sound casual while avoiding looking directly at her.

Josephine finally decided and entered the pool with an elegant slowness, her eyes briefly meeting mine before she submerged herself. Every movement, every stroke as she swam near me, was now observed with a new awareness, a new level of... longing. The barrier of shyness seemed more fragile than ever, and the desire to shorten the distance between us became increasingly pressing with each fleeting glance we shared under the setting sun.

Brianna threw an inflatable beach ball at us, her energy contagious. We played for a while, tossing it back and forth, although my eyes often strayed to Josephine. The way her wet hair clung to her neck, the way her lips curved into a smile as she laughed... every little detail now seemed incredibly attractive to me.

In a particularly errant throw, the ball landed near Josephine. We both swam towards it at the same time, our hands brushing under the water as we tried to reach it. A small electric shock ran up my arm with that simple contact. Josephine looked at me for an instant, her eyes shining with an intensity that mirrored my own.

Brianna, who had reached the ball first, looked at us with a mischievous smile. "What's wrong, lovebirds? Do you need help with the ball or are you having your own aquatic moment?" Her comment, although playful, made us both separate quickly, our cheeks slightly flushed.

"Just... trying to grab it," I mumbled, feeling a little clumsy.

Josephine nodded, looking away. "Yes, that."

Brianna giggled before throwing the ball back to us. We continued playing, but the tension between Josephine and me had intensified slightly. Every accidental touch under the water, every fleeting glance, now seemed charged with a deeper meaning, a silent longing we shared under Brianna's amused gaze.

In a moment of rest, while we floated at different ends of the pool, Brianna exclaimed, "Hey! You know what would be great? Playing Marco Polo!"

Josephine and I looked at each other. It was a silly game, but the idea of moving blindly in the water, the possibility of accidental contact... the idea didn't displease me at all.

"Sounds good to me," I said, looking at Josephine.

She nodded with a small smile. "Okay."

Brianna closed her eyes and began to shout "Marco!" Her voice echoed in the twilight silence, marking the beginning of a game that, for Josephine and me, had the potential to be much more than simple aquatic fun. The encroaching darkness and the freedom to move beneath the surface offered a new opportunity to explore that growing intimacy that floated between us, just under the watchful, albeit closed-eyed, gaze of our carefree friend.

Brianna continued shouting "Marco!", her voice echoing in the tranquility of the sunset. The water felt cooler now that the sun was hiding, tingeing the sky with shades of purple and orange. I moved stealthily beneath the surface, trying to locate the direction of her voice without making too much noise. I knew Josephine was doing the same, moving with the silent grace of a fish.

"Polo!" Brianna replied, her voice now a little more distant. I tried to orient myself, using the ripples in the water as a guide. I felt adrenaline coursing through my veins, a mixture of the thrill of the game and the anticipation of a possible encounter with Josephine in the aquatic darkness.

Suddenly, I felt a soft brush against my leg underwater. My heart skipped a beat. Was it Josephine? I stopped, holding my breath, waiting for another contact. Nothing. Maybe it had just been a current.

"Marco!" Brianna shouted again, her voice now coming from the other end of the pool. I propelled myself in that direction, moving carefully not to give away my position.

A few seconds later, I felt another touch, this time on my arm. It was more defined, more intentional. Instinctively, I reached out and touched something smooth and slippery. Skin!

I gently grabbed that limb, my heart pounding hard in my chest. "I found you!" I exclaimed, my voice a little louder than I intended.

Brianna stopped shouting "Marco Polo" and let out a laugh. "Cheater! How did you know where I was?"

I let go of the hand I had grabbed, feeling a pang of disappointment as I realized it wasn't Josephine. It was Brianna's arm. "I thought... I felt something," I mumbled, feeling a little foolish.

Josephine emerged from the water near us, a playful smile on her face. "Need a map, Romeo?"

Her voice close to my ear made my skin tingle. The faint twilight barely illuminated her face, but I could see the mischievous glint in her eyes. The game of Marco Polo had become something more, a game of approach and touch in the aquatic darkness, and the promise of a real encounter with Josephine made my pulse race with anticipation.

Brianna submerged again, shouting "Marco!" with renewed enthusiasm. This time, I moved more cautiously, trying to anticipate her movements. I felt Josephine's presence nearby, a fleeting shadow beneath the surface. At one point, our hands brushed fleetingly as we moved in opposite directions. It was a brief contact, but the electricity I felt made me stop dead in my tracks.

"Polo!" Brianna shouted from an unexpected spot near the edge. I propelled myself towards it, but just when I thought I had her close, I felt a body brush against mine from below. It was smaller, more delicate. Without hesitation, I reached out my arms and caught Josephine.

"I found you!" I exclaimed, gently holding her by the waist.

Josephine let out a muffled giggle, trying to wriggle free with soft movements. "Cheat! You weren't looking for me!"

"But I found you," I replied, moving a little closer. The faint twilight still reached the pool, partially illuminating her face. Her eyes sparkled with mischief and something more... a spark of that same excitement I felt.

Brianna emerged near us, her hair plastered to her face and a mischievous smile. "Well, well! Looks like someone found their Juliet." She looked at us curiously, her eyes going from my grip on Josephine's waist to the closeness of our faces.

The game of Marco Polo had stopped, replaced by a palpable tension in the water. Josephine's breathing quickened slightly, and I felt the beat of her heart under my hands. The line between the game and something more had blurred, leaving in its place an atmosphere charged with a silent desire, under the watchful gaze of our amused, and perhaps now slightly intrigued, friend.

Brianna swam closer slowly, a smile betraying her curiosity. "Well? Are you two going to stay there hugging or are we going to keep playing?" Her tone was light, but there was an unspoken question in her eyes.

Josephine and I looked at each other. The tension of the moment was palpable, but there was also an undeniable connection between us. Slowly, I loosened my grip on her waist, although I kept my hands close to her hips under the water.

"We could... keep playing," Josephine said softly, her gaze still fixed on mine. There was a hesitation in her voice, as if she was torn between the desire to continue this intimate moment and the need to keep up appearances in front of Brianna.

"Yes, let's keep playing," I said, trying to sound casual although my heart was still pounding. "But this time, I'll look."

I moved away from Josephine, closing my eyes and shouting "Marco!" with as much conviction as I could muster. I moved clumsily through the water, trying to locate their voices in the growing twilight. I knew Josephine and Brianna would move stealthily, taking advantage of the darkness to hide.

A few minutes of fruitless searching passed. The water felt increasingly cold, and the darkness grew denser. At one point, I accidentally bumped into something soft under the surface. Instinctively, I reached out and touched a slender arm.

"Polo!" I exclaimed, sure I had found Brianna.

"I found you!" a soft and familiar voice replied close to my ear. I opened my eyes and saw Josephine's face inches from mine, her smile shining in the darkness.

Before I could react, her hands slid up my neck and she pulled me towards her, kissing me softly on the lips. It was a short kiss, a sweet and fleeting brush, but charged with an electricity that ran through my entire body.

We separated almost immediately, our cheeks slightly flushed in the darkness. We knew Brianna was close, although we couldn't see her. The game of Marco Polo had become an excuse for our own secret approaches, a silent dance of desire beneath the surface of the pool. The intimacy we had been avoiding for so long was finally beginning to blossom in the twilight darkness.

Brianna emerged from the aquatic darkness, coughing lightly with a giggle. "What was that? Did someone find a fish?" Her tone was playful, but I could perceive a hint of curiosity in her voice.

Josephine and I separated a little, trying to compose our expressions in the dim light. "Just... bumped into Louie," Josephine replied with a naturalness that didn't fool me.

"Yeah, it was really dark," I added, trying to sound convincing. My heart was still pounding from the brief kiss.

"Well, someone's a very clumsy seeker," Brianna joked, submerging again. "Marco!"

The game continued for a few more minutes, but the atmosphere had subtly changed. Josephine and I were now more aware of each other's closeness underwater, our movements more deliberate, our fleeting glances charged with a new meaning. There were more "accidental" touches, more moments when our hands met beneath the surface, each contact sending small waves of heat through me.

Finally, the water temperature began to drop with the arrival of night. Brianna began to shiver slightly. "I think I've had enough water for today," she said, getting out of the pool and grabbing a towel. "Let's go inside, do you want to watch that horror movie I told you about?"

Josephine looked at me, a silent question in her eyes. I nodded slightly. The idea of cuddling together in the darkness of the home theater, after the small moments of intimacy in the pool, was tempting.

We got out of the water, feeling the cool night air prickle our wet skin. We wrapped ourselves in towels and walked towards the house together, leaving behind the dark and silent pool, which held the secrets of our furtive encounters beneath the surface. The promise of more closeness in the darkness of the theater floated in the air, a new setting to explore the growing connection between Josephine and me.

We entered the mansion, leaving a trail of wet footprints on the marble floor. Brianna, already wrapped in her towel, headed decisively towards the stairs.

"Guys, how about we put on our pajamas right away!" she exclaimed with her usual energy. Then she turned to Josephine with a mischievous smile and an accusing finger in the air. "And I'm warning you, Jo," she said, pointing at her with an amused look. "None of your flirty pajamas, although it's difficult seeing your closet full of lace and silk."

Josephine giggled, her cheeks still slightly flushed from the pool game and our little secret moments. "Oh, Bri, don't be such a drama queen. I have normal pajamas." Although her tone was defensive, a playful smile peeked out from her lips.

I just smiled, imagining Josephine's closet full of delicate garments. The idea of seeing her in something more comfortable, although less "flirty" according to Brianna, was also appealing to me.

"Well, I'm going to put on something warm," Brianna continued, going up the stairs. "I'll wait for you in the home theater in ten minutes! And no sneaking kisses while I change." Her comment, said with a mischievous smile over her shoulder, made Josephine and me exchange a quick and slightly embarrassed glance.

"Come on, Romeo," Josephine said, taking my hand and gently pulling me towards the stairs. "We better change before Brianna starts the movie without us... and before she starts suspecting too much." Her voice was soft, but I felt the slight squeeze of her hand, a silent reminder of the connection we shared and wanted to continue exploring, even with Brianna's funny and nosy presence nearby in this enormous mansion.

Suddenly, from the top of the stairs, Brianna's imperious shout echoed: "Josephine!" Her tone was accusatory, although with a playful undertone. "Come here! How is it possible that you don't have decent pajamas, you poor thing? Louie would have a heart attack if he saw this! Come here, I'm going to choose some for you."

Josephine sighed with an amused smile, letting go of my hand for a moment. "Oh, this Brianna... always so dramatic." Then she looked at me with a raised eyebrow. "Coming, Romeo? We don't want to miss Brianna's 'decent' pajama fashion show."

I nodded, following her up the stairs. The tension of the almost-kiss by the pool had lightened a bit with Brianna's intervention and her peculiar concern for nighttime attire. I knew those intimate moments would have to wait, but the idea of spending the night the three of us together, laughing and enjoying the freedom of the mansion, was also appealing to me. We went up the stairs, with the echo of Brianna's exaggerated voice guiding us towards Josephine's room.

Entering Josephine's room, I found Brianna standing in the middle of a sea of soft fabrics and pastel colors. The enormous walk-in closet, dimly lit, looked like a sanctuary of nighttime fashion. Brianna held up several outfits, displaying them with comical theatricality.

"Look at this, the horror!" Brianna exclaimed, holding up tiny champagne-colored silk shorts adorned with black lace. "This is what Miss Josephine considers pajamas! Pure slip hazard and temptation galore!"

Then she picked up an emerald green silk nightgown, so fine it seemed like a caress of air. "And this! A nightgown worthy of a queen... or an international spy! Where is the comfort, Josephine? Where is the soft, warm cotton?"

My cheeks flushed as I saw the garments. Imagination, like a wild runaway horse, began to gallop uncontrollably. I visualized Josephine in each of those outfits, the way the silk would slide over her skin, the lace hinting at her curves... My God, I thought, feeling a sudden heat.

Josephine, leaning against the doorframe of the closet, watched Brianna's performance with an amused smile and a slight blush on her own cheeks. "Oh, Bri, don't be so dramatic."

Brianna paused in her display, narrowing her eyes incredulously. "This is an avalanche of fine lingerie and satin robes!" She picked up another set, this time lavender lace shorts paired with a camisole of the same material. "For the love of God, Josephine! This looks more like designer underwear than pajamas for sleeping!"

My blush intensified. Each garment Brianna showed only fueled my imagination, creating vivid and tempting images of Josephine in the intimacy of the night. I urgently needed them to find those "normal pajamas" before my mind wandered too far.

"Speaking of which," Brianna said with a mischievous glint in her eyes, almost forgetting my presence in her sudden enthusiasm. "I want to see your lingerie!" she exclaimed, bouncing nimbly towards a chest of drawers that Josephine had next to the closet.

"Brianna!" Josephine cried out with a mixture of surprise and mock indignation, trying to stop her with a quick wave of her hand. "Don't you dare!" Her face had flushed considerably.

But Brianna had already reached the drawer and opened it with surprising speed. Her eyes lit up at the contents. "Oh, for the love of...! Josephine, this is art!" she exclaimed, pulling out a delicate piece of black lace with embroidered details in red silk thread. "This isn't lingerie, it's a masterpiece!"

Then she pulled out a burgundy satin set, with thin straps and lace details on the neckline. "And this! You could star in an old movie wearing this!" Her enthusiasm was contagious, and despite Josephine's obvious embarrassment, it was hard not to be curious about what Brianna was discovering.

I remained silent, feeling my cheeks burn even more. The idea of Brianna exposing Josephine's intimate clothing, albeit innocently and playfully, generated a mixture of discomfort and undeniable excitement in me. My imagination ran wild, recreating Josephine in my mind wearing those exquisite garments. My God, I thought again, feeling the need to look away, although a part of me couldn't help but observe the impromptu show of Josephine's lingerie in the hands of a fascinated Brianna.
