Chapter 22 - CHAPTER 22

How many people are there in the Uchiha clan?

How large is the Uchiha clan, really?

This question—though not explicitly answered in the manga—is indirectly addressed through the details in canon. In Naruto, it's made clear that the Uchiha clan is not just a prominent bloodline but a full-fledged community. The clan has its own commercial street, as referenced in Itachi's backstory (Itachi Shinden and Naruto manga Chapter 145), with establishments providing everything from everyday necessities to specialized ninja tools. All of these facilities are housed within the Uchiha compound, and their services are mostly extended only to Uchiha clan members.

Furthermore, the manga indicates that non-Uchiha who venture into the clan district are often met with suspicion or even hostility, reflecting the clan's deep sense of isolation. As a result, the Uchiha compound became almost a self-sustained micro-village within Konohagakure—physically part of the village but socially segregated.

Some might assume this kind of isolationism is what led to the eventual rift between the Uchiha and Konoha's leadership. But in truth, the current Uchiha compound was only constructed after the Nine-Tails' attack on the village, as punishment and precaution. The original clan compound had been located near the heart of Konoha, much closer to the Hokage's office, according to databook references and visual cues in early manga panels.

Being in the village center meant they once lived among the other clans and citizens. At that time, the Uchiha had no exclusive shopping street or physical separation. Their current isolation came after they were forcibly relocated to the outskirts of the village—something that was never formally declared but deeply felt. This was Konoha's silent condemnation, the result of the unfounded suspicion that the Uchiha were involved in the Nine-Tails' attack.

Thus, while the Uchiha rejected outsiders, it was equally true that Konoha first rejected the Uchiha. Their mutual distrust eventually crystallized into this "village within a village" model—formed not by intent but as a result of prolonged alienation. Both sides contributed to this division, and it would be unfair to label the Uchiha purely as victims.

All this is worth reiterating now because it clarifies one thing: the Uchiha clan is immense—both in scale and influence.

In fact, this magnitude is precisely why, when Uchiha Yue previously fought Uchiha Itachi and Obito in a concealed section of the Uchiha compound, the entire clan wasn't immediately drawn to the conflict. The battle was brief and occurred near the periphery, sparing the clan from full alarm. But once the battle ended and Yue stood victorious, suppressing two of the clan's most formidable ninja, and stepped into view surrounded by astonished Uchiha, everything changed.

"The entire clan is in uproar."

"Uchiha Yue, what the hell happened?! Itachi is the young patriarch, our clan's greatest genius. Why would he attack his own blood?!"

"That's right! Uchiha Itachi has always been the pride of the Uchiha. A true heir to our legacy! What you're saying—how could it possibly be true?!"

"Hmph! Uchiha Yue? You're just a ninja academy student! Even if you're talented, there's no way you could defeat Itachi in combat! What kind of scheme are you plotting?!"

Murmurs turned into accusations, and disbelief simmered in every direction. Only a handful had actually witnessed Yue's strength firsthand. And to the others, his sudden accusation against Itachi—combined with his youth—only painted him as a usurper seeking glory through manipulation.

But Yue remained unshaken.

"Silence."

With a low, chilling command, Uchiha Yue's chakra burst outward in a wave of sheer pressure.

Boom!

The very earth beneath him cracked. The sheer density of his chakra—tangible and suffocating—pushed several doubters to their knees. Panic overtook their arrogance, and a stunned silence replaced their angry words. The eyes of every clansman snapped toward him, wide with shock and growing awe.

"Question my strength again, and I'll personally demonstrate it. We don't have time for infighting or ignorance."

"Listen carefully. What I say next concerns the life and death of the Uchiha. Anyone who disobeys will answer directly to me."

Yue's eyes, glowing with the power of his awakened Mangekyō, swept across the stunned assembly like a blade.

"We all know what our clan has been planning. Don't pretend otherwise. Konoha knows, too."

A heavy silence followed, as those words validated what many had feared but never voiced.

"I'm telling you now—Sarutobi Hiruzen and the village council have already decided on our fate. Their solution? Extermination. Itachi and another Uchiha have betrayed us to become their weapons."

He paused briefly, gauging the shocked reactions.

"I've already stopped Itachi and his accomplice—for now. But the message of their failure has reached Konoha. Sarutobi is leading an army here, as we speak."

Panic swelled in the crowd, but Yue raised his hand.

"There's no time to waste. Assemble squads immediately. Fighters to the front, civilians to safe zones. We must defend ourselves, or we'll be wiped out."

His voice then sharpened to a razor point.

"Anyone with questions, speak now. I'll give thirty seconds."

Despite the invitation, no one spoke. The fear, the awe, the truth—all silenced them.

In their silence, however, understanding bloomed. Most of the Uchiha had long known the coup wasn't a rumor but an inevitability. Yue's words only confirmed what had always loomed beneath the surface. And with corpses of their own kin slain by Itachi as evidence, there was little left to doubt.

Even if Yue were lying—which he clearly wasn't—it wouldn't change the immediate threat bearing down on them.

He wasn't just right.

He was their only hope.
