Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Against the Veraty Family (Part 1)

POV Trini

We had everything ready to leave, but my pistols were missing. We'd most likely go straight back to the clinic, where Arthur is probably fighting alone.

Trini: "Do you have any idea where my weapons might be?" I said to my companion.

Sullivan: "Most likely they're in a warehouse, but where I have no idea." I think we have no choice but to keep searching. I need to find that anti-tank rifle like a kite if I want to get there, since we don't know, at least I don't, how powerful those guys can be. So far we've only faced three, and we already know one has a Devil Fruit; only someone with one can punch through a wall. Speaking of which...

Trini: "Hey, the guy who tackled me before we were defeated, do you know him?" I asked. I remember him saying something about that guy before I fainted.

Sullivan: "I ran into him once in the woods. I knew he was a mobster because of his suit, but when I found him, he didn't do anything to me. I also didn't know he had a Devil Fruit."

Trini: "Speaking of the guys, do you know anything else about the other guys, about their leader?" I need some information before I try to fight them.

Sullivan: "Nothing too important, except that he has weapons and some training. After all, he comes from the Salvatore family. That much is known about the right and left-hand men of the family boss. The left-hand man is a guy with long blue hair tied in a ponytail and he has a copper-colored watch. The right-hand man is a guy with black hair with a white streak. He also has a watch, but it's silver."

Trini: "We can infer that the boss will have a gold-colored watch. You're talking about the Salvatore family. Who are they?"

Sullivan: "It was like the main family in terms of the mafia. This is where the other mafias come from, and it no longer exists, but I don't know anything about it."

After exploring an empty place, it made me uneasy, because if there's no one here, it means all the mobsters have gone to the clinic, which is just one more reason to rush to get my weapons.

When Sullivan opened the door, he froze. When I looked in, I saw a guy lying in a chair. He had a hat covering his face as if he were sleeping, but the important thing was that he had long blue hair and a copper watch on his wrist.

???: "I thought they'd never come, but I had a suspicion that if they managed to escape, they'd come here." At that moment, he took off his hat, stood up, and walked toward a gun, "more specifically, this gun." He now had the anti-tank rifle in his hand.

I don't like this, because if I want my gun back, I'll have to defeat this guy. I looked around, and there weren't any guns in plain sight; they were all on the side where this guy was.

Krakel: "How rude my manners are. Let me introduce myself. My name is Krakel, and I'm the boss's left-hand man," he said while bowing. "Let me invite you and your companions to join our family. With you by our side, we can confront the Oxford family and take them out of the underworld to take their place."

I see. Mob disputes. These guys must want to take this other mob's place in the underworld. I remember Dante talking about that place, more specifically about Morgans being part of it.

Trini: "Sorry, but we have no interest in supporting or being part of a mob, much less being lapdogs like you." I could see her smile fade for a few moments before returning.

Krakel: "It doesn't matter. If they don't join, there's no other choice but to destroy them, and don't expect me to be as weak as the guy you defeated."

Trini: "A dog is a dog, I don't think there's much difference between you dogs."

Krakel: "We'll see about that," he said as he pulled out a pistol.

Trini: "You'd better hide yourself and not be so obtrusive like last time," I told Sullivan. He did as I asked, hiding among the weapons. I rolled up my sleeves and went into combat mode. I just hope the hand-to-hand training with Dante helped.

He started shooting, but with my sense of purpose, I could see where he was aiming. I wasn't even crazy enough to see the bullets. I ended up taking cover behind a pillar, and we were like that for a while. Every time I had a reload, I took advantage of the opportunity to slowly approach.

When I was a safe distance away, I kicked the gun out of his hand. I tried to kick him again, but he caught it, and that's how the blows between us began.

I was capable of hitting him harder than he did me, but the strength between us was remarkable. One blow from him was like three blows from me. I tried to stop him from hitting me, but I wasn't skilled enough to dodge it.

Suddenly, I saw him pull a knife out of his pants. This was getting dangerous. I couldn't pull out any weapons since they were all hidden, and I didn't have time to do so, especially with him carrying a knife.

I did my best to dodge the blows. Some of them landed, but they only grazed me. There was a moment when I was planning to use a stronger blow, but I found it difficult to execute, but I stopped dead in my tracks. I saw him hold the knife to my neck. I saw his smile widen as if he had won, but he forgot it wasn't a one-on-one fight.

*Bang*

A pistol shot rang out. Behind Krakel was Sullivan with several pistols. One of them was the one he'd just used. I shot him in the knee, causing him to lose his balance and concentration. I seized the moment to hit him with the blow I intended. It didn't work, but it helped push him away. At that moment, I moved behind the guy, looking at Sullivan.

Trini: "Throw them all at me," I ordered, and luckily he did as I asked.

The guy had already gotten up, trying to attack again, but it was too late.

*Bang* *Bang*

I shot Krakel twice. I immediately threw the pistols to the ground, since they were all sparks and only had one bullet left.

Trini: "The rest." Sullivan proceeded to throw the rest of the pistols at me.

*Bang* *Bang* *Bang* *Bang* *Bang* *Bang*

After firing a few shots in his chest, he finally fell to the ground dead. The place fell silent. I stared at the guy. It was his first time killing. I was no stranger to blood, having seen Dante kill, but he never forced me or Arthur to do it.

Sullivan: "It's fine that you killed him. Shouldn't you have arrested him and then handed him over like heroes do?"

Trini: "Dante said that if we could, we should capture the guys, but if it meant losing our lives, we shouldn't. It was better to kill the guy than to kill us. He wants to be a hero and save everyone, but if it meant losing our lives, then he'd decide to kill him directly, so he recommended we do it ourselves if necessary. So this is fine," I said more to the wind than anything.

Trini: "It doesn't matter anymore, let's get my weapons and go to the clinic." Honestly, I didn't feel like talking about this anymore.

Arthur's POV

*chis-chis* *chis-chis* *chis-chis*

The clash of my spear with his sword continued, each looking for an opening to launch a decisive slash at the other. Thanks to the length of my spear, he couldn't easily reach me; he was always a safe distance away.

This guy, who called himself Chris, was quite flexible; he was able to dodge and maneuver my attacks with relative ease, making it difficult for me to land a direct hit.

Moving Durindana was complicated, but I wasn't a novice with these weapons—a beginner, perhaps—but I had a few tricks up my sleeve.

I let him get close to me to dodge his sword, then I gave him a parry, mostly to make distance, already a few meters away, I raised and threw horizontally with my arms extended and my target.

With a powerful movement, I put my right foot forward and, with a 270-degree turn from my back to my front, I launched an energy attack at him. But I didn't stop there. With another twist of my spear, I launched two more.

It seems I succeeded in a careless moment, as I managed to dodge the first attack, but not the second and third. I managed to cut him in the chest with one, but the second one I blocked with my swords.

His expression darkened, then turned to anger. With a burst of momentum, he lunged forward. I decided to deliver a direct blow with the tip of my spear, but what I didn't expect was that he managed to deflect the blow with one of his swords, then tried to stab me with the other.

Without time left, I took out the piece of iron Asclepius gave me and transformed it into a shield, managing to block a direct attack to my heart.

I decided to continue using my Devil Fruit, making a small hole in my shield, allowing my opponent's sword to pass through it, and then immediately closing it, trapping his sword in my shield. With a sharp movement, I managed to take that sword away from him. In the process, I deflected his sword with my shield, leaving him unprotected. With a quick twist, I managed to pierce through, stabbing him in the lung.

I quickly drew my spear and hit him in the head with the blunt end, knocking him out, and achieving my victory.

I turned to the other mobsters. They looked at me, a little strangely, as if nothing important had happened. They didn't really understand why, I had defeated their leader.

Arthur: "I've already defeated your leader," I said to the guys, "now leave and don't come back, unless you want to fight me and face the wrath of my spear."

???: "You're mistaken about something," I heard behind me. When I turned around, I felt a blow to my jaw, causing me to lose consciousness and fall to the ground. I tried to regain my senses, but I couldn't; it was difficult.

???: "He wasn't their leader, I was," said the man who hit me. He quickly stomped hard on my chest, breaking some ribs. He then grabbed my spear and threw it away.

???: "I am the head of the Veraty family, Antonello Veraty," he said, then stomped again, but on my abdomen. Blood came out of my mouth, and I almost choked on it.

He was a man about 1.79 meters tall, with slicked-back blond hair and light blue eyes. He had a gold watch on his right arm.

Antonello: "Can someone take that gun from his side? It's made of sea stone, so I can't touch it."

One of the thugs approached me and managed to take Nemesis away from me. I couldn't do anything; my chest and abdomen hurt too much to do anything.

Antonello: "Now you'll all be under the Veraty family." I looked at the clinic. "Now talk about this place. One of my men is seriously injured and needs care."

Nothing, nothing happened, just silence. This angered Antonello.

Antonello: "If you don't open the door to this place, I'll blow it to pieces." His men, who had machine guns, pointed at the clinic.

Antonello: "If you don't open the door in three seconds, I'll open fire on every doctor and patient in the place." Still nothing, just silence.

Antonello: "You're looking for them," he said, raising his hand. "THREE, TWO."

???: "One," someone was heard saying.

Suddenly, the clinic door was slashed with multiple cuts, shattering it. Once all the pieces fell, a man with blond hair, about 6 feet tall, red eyes, and a giant sword in his right hand was seen.

Dante: "So you're the ones who want to steal my chili dogs."
