Ryuji knew he had to act; otherwise, he'd die.
He couldn't breathe or move, making Water Breathing impossible. Even Wood Invasion, with a single breath's worth of energy, wouldn't destroy all of Lower Rank Four's cells. A prolonged fight was futile.
Should he use Demonification? He considered it but didn't want to forfeit the mission reward. Defeating Lower Rank Three had been difficult; using Demonification now would waste his efforts.
In his desperation, he recalled a Wood Invasion practice session where uncontrolled energy exploded, injuring his skin. He'd healed it with Wood Breathing, preventing scarring.
With only one breath, the explosion's location was critical.
He reluctantly chose his nose; it was the only way to regain his breath and turn the tide.
A Hashira, trapped like this, would likely die. Inside Lower Rank Four, they couldn't breathe or move, making any attack impossible.
Inability to breathe was a death sentence. Even a Hashira, without breathing techniques, couldn't defeat a basic {demon} relying solely on physical attributes.
Even if a Hashira had a last breath, like Ryuji, immobility inside Lower Rank Four prevents any counterattack. They'd need a weaponless technique.
Ryuji's advantage was Wood Breathing, outside the five main styles. It didn't require a weapon; with a breath, he could use it.
He concentrated wood energy near his nose. This extremely volatile energy, generated through a special breathing pattern, reached a critical point in the confined space, causing an explosion.
"Boom!"
A dull explosion shattered Lower Rank Four's grip, scattering her body. Ryuji's nose bled profusely.
He greedily breathed, using Wood Invasion.
Lower Rank Four, surprised by his resistance, tried to re-envelop him.
Ryuji wouldn't let her.
