Chapter 40 - Convergence

The night roared with chaos.

Dozens of infected swarmed into the perimeter like a tidal wave of rot and fury. Their gurgled screams mixed with gunfire and shouted commands as STARS members, RPD officers, UBCS soldiers, and Echo Six fought side-by-side to hold the line.

The ground trembled as Tony was locked in brutal melee combat with the new Nemesis-type Tyrant.

The creature was relentless—faster than the first, more vicious, with a body that could heal nearly as fast as Tony could damage it. Flesh tore and regrew before his eyes. Tony's clothes were already shredded, and his coat smoldered from a glancing incendiary round.

He danced around the creature with inhuman grace, twin pistols blazing, blades slashing when the gap closed.

"You just don't quit!" he snarled, ducking a swipe that sent a chunk of pavement flying.

He landed a kick to the beast's jaw, snapping it sideways, then blasted it with an explosive round from his shotgun.

But for every hit he landed, there were more infected pouring through holes in the defense lines.

"We're getting overrun!" Carlos yelled, firing into a wave as lickers leaping off rooftops.

Marvin barked into his radio, "We need more time! Get the civilians moving! Go, go, go!"

Claire was in the middle of an escort formation with Leon, moving civilians toward the sewer entrance. Her pistol clicked empty—she switched to her revolver and shot a zombie lunging toward a child.

Then a screech.

A licker burst from the shadows toward Sherry.

Leon screamed, too far away.

But someone else was faster.

A blur of red and black moved like a whisper of death.

Ada Wong appeared from the shadows, pistol raised. The licker dropped mid-pounce with a hole through its skull.

"Who—?" Leon blinked as Ada moved toward Sherry.

Sherry looked up in fear, her small hands clutched around the pendant on her neck.

Ada knelt. "It's okay, sweetheart. I'm here to help."

She gently removed the pendant from around the girl's neck and slid it into her coat pocket.

Leon ran up. "Hey! What are you—?"

Ada's hand shot out, stopping him.

"Tell Jasen... he owes me two now. And tell Leo to train you better."

She tossed the pendant back to him. It was empty.

With that, she spun around and disappeared into the smoke.

Leon stared after her, stunned. "Who the hell... was that?"

Before he could process it—

BANG!

A black tactical truck screeched into view at the outer edge of the chaos.

The driver's door flew open.

Jasen stepped out.

Eyes glowing faintly with golden flecks. He carried a modified rifle on his back and his machete on his hip.

He stepped through the chaos, gun raised, firing into the crowd of infected like a reaper.

Jill spotted him first. "Jasen!"

Leon turned, wide-eyed.

Tony, still fighting the Nemesis-type, saw him and smirked.

"About time you showed up."

Jasen walked past him.

"I'm here. Let's end this."
