Chapter 58: Meeting the Mirror of Erised
"You discovered a mirror? And you saw your parents in the mirror?"
Dylan picked up a small dish of blackcurrants and elderberries, tiny grapes, and stuck one into his mouth.
Harry nodded over and over again, "That mirror showed me my parents, they were standing directly behind me!"
Apparently lost in some recollection, Harry spoke softly, "They smiled so happily."
Ron, who had come in midway through Harry's story, rubbed his sleepy eyes and grabbed a piece of bread, "What a wonderful experience! Why didn't you ask me to go with you?"
"I want very much to know what your mum and dad look like. My brother told me they're heroes!"
Harry smiled cheerfully, "Then, shall we go again tonight?"
"That way, I can see your family directly too."
Harry had received presents from the Weasleys at Christmas; yesterday he had thought it had been the best Christmas ever!
"It's no big deal. Otherwise, you can just come to my house in the summer holidays," Ron said offhandedly.
Harry jumped at the offer at once.
Then Ron looked at Dylan, "And what about you, Dylan? Would you like to come with us then? We have gnomes in our garden, we can play with them!"
"Or chase pixies! Oh, my parents have some enchanted treasures buried too! We can spend loads of time searching!"
Dylan blinked.
Looking at Harry and Ron's excited eyes, he thought about how his parents were now occupied making money and enjoying their life as a couple, maybe even planning to have another child.
He snorted to himself and then agreed, "Okay, we can spend the summer holidays together."
"Woohoo! Then you can't just read those boring books every day, or my mum will definitely use you as an example to warn me," Ron laughed.
"I'll try," Dylan said, not being serious.
Harry said now, "Dylan, do you want to go with us tonight? We can also visit your parents together!"
"I think I'll pass."
When Harry had spoken of the Invisibility Cloak yesterday, he already had in his mind the Mirror of Erised.
Its proper name was "The Mirror of Erised."
And "Erised" spelled backwards was indeed "desire," and also, it was the name of the mythological goddess of discord.
So, this was a mirror which was able to show the most heart-felt, deepest desires of one's mind.
Dylan was really kind of interested in this, even though he did not know what the mirror would reveal.
The magic mirror would not just reveal a person their family, like Harry thought.
What if the mirror revealed something strange and unusual for him?
It would not actually matter if Harry and Ron just happened to see it.
The thing was that Dumbledore could not possibly not be snooping around.
If the mirror revealed something bad and Dumbledore had seen it, wouldn't he be in a huge amount of trouble?
"Ah, are you really not going?"
"Yeah, I've already made appointments with Professor Flitwick and Professor McGonagall."
"Huh, didn't you book time with Professor Snape?"
"...No."
"What a pity!"
Dylan finished the rest of his fruit and then prepared to go to Professor Snape's office.
This arrogant little snot-nosed git still had to be convinced in the right way.
Dylan knocked on his door and charmed Professor Snape for quite a while before spending the entire day learning about potions in Snape's office.
The next day, following morning class with Professor Flitwick, Professor Flitwick addressed him first regarding some matters regarding Defense Against the Dark Arts.
It might be argued that as he was a Ravenclaw graduate, yes, he did have some experience. He was able to quite often spot quite a number of Dylan's fuzzy points with very considerate remarks.
Dylan was addressed in the afternoon regarding Transfiguration by Professor McGonagall again. Professor McGonagall prohibited him from further working on the Entropy Rupture Distortion Curse.
But she did spend the relevant theories of secondary control and spell shaping in detail with him.
Just prior to evening, after Dylan had come out of Professor McGonagall's office.
He planned to grab something to eat quickly and come back to fortify the knowledge he had gained today.
But en route, he stumbled upon an unoccupied classroom with nothing but a full-length mirror.
"Hmm?" Dylan was taken aback.
The door of the classroom was not fully opened, but ajar. But passing by it, he was able to glance into the mirror inside.
Dylan couldn't help but stop.
"Is this the abandoned classroom Harry described to me?"
Glancing inside, it appeared so.
"Is the placement of this classroom so obvious?"
Dylan couldn't help but raise an eyebrow.
"Hmm. it would be Dumbledore's deliberate arrangement after returning the Invisibility Cloak to Harry, wouldn't it?"
He'd declined to go and look in the mirror yesterday with Harry, but as he'd collided with it today.
Dylan looked around. He didn't see Harry's figure.
"Harry isn't here, Dumbledore probably isn't either."
Dylan hesitated for a moment at the doorway, then slipped into the classroom and quietly closed the door behind him.
"Look in the mirror once, get something done. I wonder what reward it will give."
Dylan peered around and went on to walk around the mirror three times with wand in hand, finding no other气息 snooping on him.
A bit relieved, he stood slowly before the mirror.
Reading the words written at the top.
Spelling it backwards—
"Ehruo yt uoC raefaH yirt si noht yoru esaR." (I reveal not your face but your heart's desire.)
Dylan looked at the face of the mirror.
The magic mirror's surface appeared to be covered in a thin mist. But the instant his silhouette was fully reflected in the mirror, the mist slowly disappeared, and an image slowly came into focus.
A spring afternoon.
Dylan and his parents abandoned their small and tight house and settled into a villa.
He no longer woke up in the small basement anymore. Rather, he woke up from a huge bed and, surrounded by the sleepy morning light, came out to the backyard garden.
His parents were carefully setting several delicacies on a long dining table in the garden. Two small figures looking like his younger brothers and sisters played and ran in the grass, and. had fighting gnomes.
Dylan blinked.
Were his parents ever going to get him a younger sister?
No, did he ever wish for his parents to get him a younger sister?
The image on the magic mirror changed once again.
A large group of people passed alongside the side of their garden.
Everyone in greeted by Dylan and his parents.
Hermione, who had an illustrated book on magical plants very thick in hand, was giving explanations of magical plants that had been grown around.
Harry and Ron were playing with his little brothers, fighting gnomes.
Neville, Seamus, George.
Dylan also saw Professor Snape, Professor McGonagall, Professor Flitwick.
Professor Snape's expression was as serious as ever, but whenever Dylan's parents greeted him, he would also show a faint warm smile.
"A garden party, huh," Dylan smiled.
