I couldn't breathe.
My chest rose and fell in uneven gasps, air slicing into my lungs like knives. My hands were shaking so hard that I nearly dropped the phone. My knees buckled under me as I pressed the device tighter to my ear, the cruel laughter on the other end digging deeper into my brain.
Danny stood beside me, eyes wide with disbelief and rage, and pointed frantically at the phone. "Put it on speaker. Now!"
With trembling fingers, I fumbled with the screen and hit the speaker button. Celeste's voice poured out of the phone, as silky and venomous as ever.
"Oh, how cute. You even brought your little boyfriend along." She chuckled, low and mocking. "What a family reunion."
"Where is my son?" I snapped, my voice shaking but firm. "Celeste, if you have even a shred of humanity left in you, you'll bring him back to me. Now."
