She didn't answer me right away.
Just stood there—caught, tense, her golden eyes flickering with something between defiance and uncertainty.
Like she knew she had crossed a line.
Like she was waiting for me to react.
"I asked you a question, Cassidy."
Her jaw tightened. "I went out."
"With who? Jonathan."
She flinched.
Just barely.
But I saw it.
And it made something ugly twist in my chest.
"You've been avoiding me all morning," I continued, stepping closer, "only to sneak off with Jonathan?"
Her arms crossed. "I didn't sneak anywhere. I can leave when I want, can't I?"
I laughed, but there was no humor in it. "Really?"
"Yes." Her chin lifted. "Or would you rather keep me locked away like some prized possession?"
I stilled.
Because I didn't have an answer for that.
Not one she'd want to hear.
Cassidy took a slow breath, as if trying to steady herself. "Jonathan invited me to lunch. I accepted. That's all."
