I didn't know how I felt at that moment.
Even though I'd seen it coming, even though I'd anticipated it somehow, I was still stunned. I just stood there, unable to fully believe those words had come from his mouth.
"Did you just ask me to be your girlfriend?" I asked, needing to hear it again clearly, directly. I needed to be sure I wasn't imagining things.
He nodded, his smile nervous, a little sheepish. "Yes," he said. "That's what I'm doing. I'm asking you to be my girlfriend. So… what do you say? Will you?"
I smiled, eyes darting away, avoiding his gaze. I was nervous too, even though I'd already made the decision in my mind.
Yes. I was going to do this... I was going to make him fall for me.
He was right, I had made him break so many of his own rules, and now here he was, asking me to be exclusive. And as much as Caesar Blackwell had a reputation, from everything I'd learned about him, he never lied. He didn't lead people on.
