Chapter 34 - TEARS OF THE HEARTLESS

**BOOOOMMMM!!!!!?**

Suddenly the demon unconscious body exploded. Kanade was quick enough to block Ayaka with a mud wall, even though it was destroyed and the force had pushed her and Ayaka crashing into the other side.

"Ayaka, where are you?" Kanade yelled as she forced herself out of the crumbles.

"Ugh....." Ayaka said, her tone shows how disappointed she was. "Turns out this one was also a clone"

"Are you okay!?" Kanade asked in shock.

"Yes, sensei" Ayaka brighten up. "Just a little scratch here and there, but don't worry, it will heal up"

Kanade signed. She brought out her phone and looked at it, it had cracks all over the screen but it was still enough to see some things at least. How does Yaze use his phone during a fight and it never ends up broken?.

The time was 11:26, she had wasted more than an hour fighting a clone, and if not for Ayaka she would have been dead by now. But, Ayaka is more powerful than she looks, she might not look like it but she is the host of a goddess, which basically makes her a goddess.

She was worshipped by the Kamisato clan and have several shrine around Japan, China and South Korea. The more she is worshipped, the more stronger she becomes, even though her worshippers had reduced by roughly seventy percent, she is still as strong as ever. You can't really expect any less from a goddess.

"Let's head back" Kanade ordered. "We'll report to Miss Natski and Yaze will clear up this place before morning"

"Okay, sensei" Ayaka said and walked towards Kanade as they both walked up the stairs, disappointed. Ayaka was disappointed because she couldn't get the bounty while Kanade was cause she won't be able to buy an expensive wine she saw at a bar.

"I'm useless, I can't help my student" Kanade said to herself. "I haven't done much since when I became Yaze teammate except being a mother to them, I couldn't even beat Thomas"

Kanade stared at her palm as she opened and closed it continuously, she couldn't even defeat Thomas neither can she keep up with Yaze. "Have they both gotten a lot stronger than me, or am I the one that have gotten too weak"

...

As they got back to the academy, Ayaka headed straight to her room as ordered by Kanade while Kanade went to meet Miss Tokoyami.

"Good night, Sensei!" Ayaka yelled and waved at Kanade who nodded gently before walking away. "I wonder what's gotten into her"

Ayaka shook it off and walked into her room, she quickly noticed that it was dark. That was unlike Kakashi, he never agreed to turn off the lights at night.

He always says, "They are meant to be used at night"

_Well, there is always a first time for everything_

Ayaka have Kakashi a good night kiss and helped herself to the upper bunk, it might not have been a good idea but he was fast asleep so she doubt he'll notice it.

...

{KANADE}

"Why didn't you tell me!?. You said Thomas is dead!, But the demon we fought..., He's still alive!" Kanade said, it was hard to tell if she was angry or sad.

Miss Tokoyami sat on her chair, staring through the window at the city. Shibuya was beautiful during the day and even more beautiful at night.

"Thomas is dead" She said without facing Kanade, her voice was absolute. "That demon is just using his body"

"But..., You should have..."

"There is nothing we should have done, I know how you feel about him and how you were before. But, with what happened to Yaze and Thomas suddenly giving himself to a demon, it was just too much" Miss Tokoyami stood up from her chair and walked to Kanade. "Yaze is still in pain because of that, so for his sake, just forget about Thomas, he is a demon now and there's nothing we can do"

"Y-Yes ma'am" Kanade nodded reluctantly.

"There's something I want you to do" Miss Tokoyami walked back to her chair. "The exchange program is fast approaching and I won't be here. So, I want you to keep a close eye on Kakashi and Ayaka"

"Why?"

"Thom..., I mean Tomura might try to attack Kakashi, I don't know when but I'm sure he would, and there will be another attack at an academy. I don't know which one, but I want us to be prepared for anything"

"Yes ma'am" Kanade answered and walked away.

Miss Tokoyami relaxed on her chair and shifted her attention to the city.

"...One day, you'll all understand why I do this..."

...

{AYAKA}

Even though it was 2am, Ayaka could still see the wall clock clearly thanks to the moonlight that found it's way into the room. The moonlight shined directly at Kakashi's bed and since she was on the top bunk, she didn't receive much moonlight. Ayaka was uncomfortable, she adjusted herself on her bed but it didn't help, she just couldn't sleep, she felt disturbed. She decided to sleep on Kakashi's bed.

The thought of sleeping on the same bed with Kakashi made her blush, but it wasn't the first time they were sharing a bed together. Beside, everything will be alright as long as she woke up before him.

Ayaka sat up and looked under her bed but Kakashi was not there, the bathroom lights were on so she assumed that he was in there.

_So much for sneaking into his bed_

Kakashi came out about two minutes later. Ayaka quickly lie down and covered her face, pretending to be asleep while Kakashi wiped his face with a towel and lay down on his bed.

Ayaka suddenly heard his voice.

"Why?" Kakashi whispered to himself, he was trying his best to hold it in, but it was too much for him. "I can't protect anyone, I couldn't protect my mom, I couldn't protect Tokah, I couldn't even protect my friends at the lab. I'm a failure"

Kakashi cried silently. She wouldn't have heard him if she was asleep, but her sharp hearing picked up every sound that he made, it also made her sad. He had suffered, he had seen what a kid shouldn't have saw, he lost his mother, abandoned his sister and have no idea how his friends died, but he was still able to smile and act like nothing ever happened.

_I wish I was as strong as him._

"I can't protect them" he continued. "I can't be a hero, I can't be anyone hero. I wanted to become stronger so I can protect my family but in the end I was weak..."

"You are not weak" Ayaka said as she hugged him tightly, pulling him towards herself. "You are not weak, you're not a failure"

Ayaka didn't realize when she him and gently held his head to her chest. Ayaka didn't know why she was trying to console him, but for some reason, she felt like it was her job, not as his teammate but as his closest friend. She didn't want him to cry.

"Bu... But i... I let all those people die" Kakashi said, his face was covered with tears which he rubbed all over Ayaka's nightgrown as he cried and pushed himself closer to me. "I can't be a hero if I let people die because of me"

"Then you can be my hero" Ayaka whispered. "You can protect me always, no matter where I am, you can be my hero"

"I can be your hero?" Kakashi asked, they was uncertainty in his voice.

"Yes, even though you can't save the whole world. If you manage to save me when I'm in need, doesn't that still makes you an hero?" Ayaka advised. "So please, don't talk down on yourself. Don't talk down on my hero"

Kakashi looked up at Ayaka and she gave him a friendly smile. Kakashi eyes widened, it like he saw something in her, something that he didn't see the first time they met.

"Mom?"
