As always, Shen He rushed to the rear of the water-elemental barrier, her ice-forged spear flashing through the air as she thrust it forward.

Just like during the harsh combat drills under Coulson's reinforced training regimens, she focused purely on a single point, never wavering. Every strike drained her stamina, and she even cast aside her defense, ignoring the enemy's retaliations. Her sole focus was on relentless offense, immersed in a flurry of devastating repetitions that blurred together into a storm of spearwork.

To a trained eye like Rear Water—once a member of the Right Seat of God—this kind of linear assault seemed almost juvenile. But something wasn't right. The iron staff he swung, infused with divine enchantments, now felt as if it were moving through syrup. A hidden restraining force clamped down on his limbs. The moment he tried to counter, his fist met with Shen He's advancing pressure.

The magical water sigils from the Aqua Sanctum Formation activated behind him, summoned in defense. Even with the backing of both divine magic and Saint-class durability, the infamous Rear Water, once thought invincible in this battlefield, found himself gridlocked.

They could win.

This certainty flared bright in Shen He's heart.

The morale among their party—assembled from warriors of Chaldea, SHIELD, and Academy City's unique esper-magic hybrid units—was burning high. The only goal now was to discard hesitation and unleash every ounce of might.

The scale of their clash sent ripples through Academy City. Thunderclaps echoed across the skyline, explosions lighting up the artificial moonlight like a cascade of fireworks gone rogue. Everyone with the means to flee had already retreated to bunkers or sub-level shelters. Some like the Queen Bee—Misaki Shokuhou—stood at the threshold of the warzone, trying to make sense of the battlefield from afar.

Atop a high wind turbine, a young girl observed the battlefield.

Reality warped below—where shockwaves twisted the air, and pillars of water surged with unnatural fury. Spatial rifts blinked in and out, blackening the sky like holes in paper. It was the kind of scene fit for apocalypses. But the girl wasn't fazed. She belonged to this world of monsters.

She only cared about one thing—the occasional, radiant flash of electromagnetic discharge.

That person was still there. The one known as "Misaka Mikoto." Or rather, her altered self.

Misaka Mikoto Alter bit her lip hard enough to draw blood. Since the moment she understood the betrayal of this world—its systems, its science, its people—she'd discarded her previous self: innocence, kindness, reputation. But still… a part of her old self remained alive in the battlefield.

"…Sister."

The voice came softly behind her, and a small body pressed against her back, curling up like a mischievous animal. The sensation was familiar, comforting in a way that made her stomach twist.

"Kuroko."

Even when something wet touched her neck—possibly tears—Misaka Mikoto Alter barely moved. She trusted this person too much to react with anything but calm. In her tangled past, Shirai Kuroko had always been by her side.

"You're worried about the situation out there, right? Hehehe…" Kuroko's voice retained its signature flirtation, and her fingers casually trailed over Misaka's shoulders.

Misaka Mikoto Alter gave her a flat stare and lifted her up effortlessly. "Stop fooling around."

There was no edge in her tone. No flirtatious "Sister-sama!" antics. Just silence… and a quiet sense of shared grief.

Kuroko's smile flickered with sadness. "Do you want to go out there?" she whispered, rolling over and clinging close. "I can take you."

"No."

The rejection was instant, firm.

Kuroko blinked in surprise. That tone—it wasn't just protective, it was almost desperate. Misaka Mikoto Alter grabbed Kuroko tighter and stared deep into her eyes.

"You're not leaving me behind. No matter what happens."

Kuroko flushed. "Is… is this a confession?! A proposal?! Sister-samaaaa—Heizi's heart can't take this!"

And in a flash of teleportation, she was gone—leaving behind only stunned silence.

When she reappeared, she was gasping for breath, heart hammering in her chest. That had been close. She'd nearly broken through the protective distance they both clung to.

"Kuroko…"

A soft voice startled her again. She turned quickly.

Chuchun Shili sat nearby, buried in a blanket, face pale and sleepless.

"You scared me!" Kuroko sighed in relief.

Chuchun's voice cracked. "Heizi… we can't break in. No matter what, the Windowless Building—Director Aleister's tower—it's impenetrable."

Kuroko's smile vanished.

In recent days, they'd broken into every known facility and data vault in Academy City, trying to trace the origin of Misaka's transformation. Only the Windowless Building remained—a place forbidden even to the Board of Directors.

Even Misaka, with all her altered power, couldn't break through its barriers.

"You tried digital infiltration again?" Kuroko asked.

Chuchun nodded bleakly. "Everything was rerouted. Aleister must've prepared for this."

"Damn it!" Kuroko slammed her fist against the steel wall, trembling.

Though usually seen as flirtatious or unhinged, Shirai Kuroko was a top-level Judgment enforcer—a protector of students and order. Her sense of duty was unshakable.

And she couldn't believe Misaka Mikoto would become a monster by choice.

"I'll bring her back," Kuroko whispered.

"What now?" Chuchun asked softly.

"If it's not science," Kuroko said through gritted teeth, "then it has to be magic. Those two outsiders—Jeanne and the two-ritual woman—they didn't follow orders. They came because something else compelled them."

But how could they investigate magic when it had only recently been revealed to this scientific city?

---

Back in the chaos, Shen He had long lost count of her thrusts.

But something had changed. Their multi-pronged tactics were starting to work. Fighting alongside Qi Mu Nanxiong, Kamikaze Hoori, and the two-ritual enforcer, they had deciphered Rear Water's patterns. The plan: drive him into range of the two rituals.

Even the slightest opening could lead to a fatal blow.

But Rear Water—enhanced by the divinity of the Holy Grail—remained elusive. He danced across the battlefield, using hydrokinetic barriers and divine spellcraft. As a member of the Right Seat of God and a Saint-class being, he was inhumanly resilient, capable of fighting at full power under the moon's blessing.

"We're at a stalemate," Shen Lihuo whispered, stunned by the weight of divine combat.

The God Child state overwhelmed its user with holy pressure. That's why she relied on "Flash Alone" precision strikes. Yet her enemy remained undeterred—unfatigued. Endlessly divine.

Then came Joan.

She arrived quietly, standing by with an Intermediate Strengthening Card. Her level-60 Chaldea credentials promised overwhelming force if deployed. But Shen He hesitated.

What if we don't need to use it?

All hope now rode on the two rituals.

"The mercy of the Virgin is reduced to judgment."

A voice from the darkness.

A new incantation. They retreated instinctively. Pure Saint-class magic rained from the sky like divine comets. Even Kamikaze Hoori and Qi Mu Nanxiong—gifted with psychic and elemental barriers—had to withdraw.

Even Shen He, clad in her evil spirit armor, wouldn't survive a direct hit.

But then—

"I'm ready."

"NOW!"

Shen He surged forward with renewed strength.

Rear Water, in the middle of casting the destructive miracle, left his blind spot open.

And two rituals needed no cue.

She'd seen this moment a hundred times before, replayed it over and over in her head. She didn't need Mystic Eyes of Death Perception. Just calculation.

She brought her katana down—exactly where the death line would be.

Light exploded.

The enchanted iron rod shattered.

Shen He dropped her spear and locked Rear Water's wrist.

He tried to counter, but Kamikaze Hoori tackled him from behind. Qi Mu Nanxiong's psychic field surged, wind roaring to counter Rear Water's hydro manipulation.

Seconds. That was all they needed.

"ARGHHHHHH!"

Rear Water screamed, the madness leaving him. But it was too late. Two rituals' sword pierced his chest, dispelling all Holy Grail energy.

The sky cracked. The floating water mass collapsed in a waterfall, flooding the ruined city.

His body deflated—like a burst balloon—before hitting the ground.

The madness was gone. Without it, his mind fractured.

"It's over," Shen He whispered.

She was exhausted, the evil spirit armor finally retreating into dormancy. But then—an unexpected surge.

Level up.

She blinked.

A golden treasure chest materialized in her inventory.

The first golden one.
