The day started like any other—with peace, coffee, and the blissful illusion that Opal might have a normal Luna schedule for once.
She should've known better.
Kael had just kissed her on the temple and vanished off to a border strategy meeting when a knock came at the front door of the packhouse. A cheerful one. The kind that screamed "innocent favor" and smelled vaguely of impending doom.
She opened it to find Vesta.
"Morning, Luna!" Vesta said in a chipper tone that immediately set off alarms.
Opal blinked. "Morning…?"
"We need you."
"Define we."
"The local school."
Opal stiffened. "Why?"
"The teacher in the cub wing called out sick. Again. Flu season. There's no backup and the kids are—well, it's either you or Forrest offered. I am still not sure how he heard we needed a teacher."
Opal went pale.
"I'll grab my coat."
Three Hours Later
She was going to die in this building.
That was her only conclusion.
