It was Stealth Rock. Tetsuo immediately recognized what was causing this phenomenon.
But there was nothing he could do. When he had commanded Furret to approach, he had already anticipated this outcome. Even though he had tried to maneuver around the battlefield to avoid the hazard, not closing the distance would mean sitting and waiting for defeat.
"Take the hits and keep closing in!"
Tetsuo could only hope that Defense Curl combined with Rollout would provide enough defensive reinforcement to let Furret hold out until it was within range for Quick Attack.
Thankfully, Furret was naturally talented in speed. After enduring two waves of Stealth Rock damage and being struck by five or six falling rocks, it finally made it into its attack range.
"Now! Quick Attack!"Tetsuo shouted immediately.
As long as Furret could land a Fighting-type move up close, Roggenrola would be knocked out instantly.
Furret, completely in sync with its Trainer, didn't hesitate. Its body was instantly enveloped in white light as it lunged toward Roggenrola.
Silas, watching Furret covered in wounds and gasping for breath as it rushed forward, showed no change in expression.
"Drop."
The command came out of nowhere.
Just as Furret stepped into Roggenrola's Gravity field, causing a slight loss of balance and a brief slowdown, Silas issued his order.
Furret suddenly let out a pained cry as if struck by something invisible and collapsed, losing the ability to battle.
It was Stealth Rock again.
Roggenrola had placed some of its Stealth Rock traps in the air within the Gravity zone. The moment an opponent entered that space, the floating rocks would instantly strike them.
With the added pressure of Gravity, the attack's damage was significantly amplified.
Furret, not known for its durability or endurance, had already taken considerable damage earlier. It simply couldn't withstand the attack.
Tetsuo clenched his teeth. He had known the gap in strength between them was large, but not even getting close to Roggenrola's body was too much.
He recalled Furret and pulled out another Poké Ball.
"It's your turn, Hitmonchan!"
A humanoid Pokémon, dressed in what looked like a warrior's skirt, emerged onto the battlefield.
Fortunately, the Stealth Rock setup was limited and wasn't distributed across the entire battlefield. Hitmonchan entered the field without suffering immediate damage.
"Use Swift!" Tetsuo commanded.
Hitmonchan was his starter Pokémon and was already close to Advance level. Its move set and battle prowess were vastly superior to Furret's.
Silas couldn't use the same strategy twice.
"Block it with rocks."
Silas ordered Roggenrola to create a rock wall in front of itself, absorbing part of the Swift attack.
However, Hitmonchan's attack speed and the velocity of Swift were simply too fast. A barrage of golden stars slipped through, striking Roggenrola directly.
More of the attack collided with the rocks, kicking up a cloud of dust.
"Return, Roggenrola. Go, Combusken!"
"Cha!"
Silas decisively used this moment to switch Pokémon. Training Roggenrola was one thing, but if it couldn't win this fight, there was no point in keeping it in battle.
As for why he didn't use Pidgeot, which had a greater type advantage, it was simply unnecessary.
Once Combusken entered the field, it let out a cry.
The sheer size of the Pokémon immediately caused a stir among the spectators.
A normal Combusken was about 0.9 meters tall and weighed around 20 kilograms, which meant it should look significantly smaller compared to Hitmonchan, which stood at 1.4 meters and weighed 50 kilograms.
Even more so because Tetsuo 's Hitmonchan had developed beyond the average standard, reaching a height of 1.5 meters.
Yet, despite this, Silas' Combusken stood on the battlefield, looking just as large as Hitmonchan.
Many of the competing Trainers watching from the sidelines had a subtle change in expression. Raw data never captured the full impact of seeing something in person.
Even those who had already heard about how well-trained Silas' Combusken was were still astonished by its physical presence.
Of course, Silas didn't care what others were thinking.
"Flamethrower!"
Combusken unleashed a stream of fire toward Hitmonchan.
It was almost an unspoken rule that Fire-type Pokémon started battles with Flamethrower.
Most Fire-type Trainers liked to test their opponents with this move. It had low energy consumption, high power, fast execution, and long range making it an excellent opening attack.
During the brief moment that Silas had switched Pokémon, Hitmonchan had used Focus Energy, heightening its concentration and attack precision.
"Vacuum Wave, counter it!"
Hitmonchan swung its fists, firing two transparent Vacuum Waves to intercept the incoming flames.
Upon impact, much of the Flamethrower dissipated, but some of the fire still managed to reach Hitmonchan, scorching parts of its body.
Tetsuo frowned. This wasn't the outcome he had envisioned but at least the damage wasn't too high.
"Agility! Close in and use Mach Punch!"
Tetsuo wasn't too concerned and immediately commanded Hitmonchan to rush toward Combusken for close-quarters combat.
Even though reports stated that Silas' Combusken specialized in Fighting-type techniques, Tetsuo refused to believe it could match a natural close-combat expert like Hitmonchan.
The only concern was whether Combusken would keep its distance and attack from mid-range.
"Flame Charge! We'll counter with Thunder Punch!"
Silas, unfazed, had Combusken charge forward without hesitation.
Tetsuo was delighted to hear Silas' command, secretly thinking:
"This is why amateurs can't compare to properly trained professionals."
Even the spectators watching the battle shook their heads. Combusken's choice was poor.
Meanwhile, on the battlefield, one Pokémon moved lightly, fists glowing white, while the other was engulfed in flames, its claws crackling with electricity—both rapidly closing in on each other.
"Boom!"
"Bang!"
"Smack!"
Combusken collided directly with Hitmonchan, throwing it off balance before striking with its electrified claws.
But Hitmonchan, as a Fighting-type Pokémon, wasn't going to be beaten that easily.
Even as it stumbled, it used the momentum from Combusken's attack to twist its body, landing a powerful Uppercut to Combusken's chin.
Both Pokémon took damage, but neither backed down as they engaged in an intense close-range battle.
Fists and claws clashed rapidly neither giving an inch.
The crowd roared with excitement.
The raw, physical exchange of blows sent adrenaline rushing through the spectators, making the battle even more thrilling.
This was precisely why so many people admired Fighting-type Pokémon.
A moment ago, many had doubted Silas' battle choice, but now, seeing the fierce exchange, they couldn't deny how exhilarating it was.
However, Silas remained calm, watching the battle without any reaction.
Meanwhile, Tetsuo's face gradually changed.
He had assumed Combusken would struggle in close combat against Hitmonchan, yet it was holding its own.
"This… This can't be right."
Iron muttered to himself in disbelief.
There was always a gap between Standard-level Pokémon and Advance-level Pokémon, but since Hitmonchan was close to breaking through, while Combusken had only recently advanced, the difference shouldn't have been that significant.
Yet, here was his Hitmonchan, a pure Fighting-type Pokémon, losing in close combat against a Fire-type using an Electric-type move.
It didn't make sense.
"And… if this keeps up, things will only get worse for me."
Just as that thought crossed his mind, bad luck struck.
