The car went silent. Emma stared at the floor before smiling faintly and wiping the remaining tears from her cheeks.
"I'll understand if you don't… but if you love someone unconditionally—you do everything for them. You'd even die for them. It's just my fault for thinking someone like her could…" Emma said, her voice fading as Skylar looked at her.
"I do understand," Skylar said quietly. "I did once. And now look at me… There's no such thing as love. It's a fantasy."
Emma nodded and leaned on her shoulder.
Jordan opened his mouth to respond, but Techna grabbed his arm and shook her head. He sighed and turned his gaze out the window.
"Emma… why did Rora die?" Skylar asked softly.
Emma's breath hitched. "Just like the others… who tried to save me. But this time was different. She already knew my problem and still tried to fix it…"
Skylar gave a bitter smile. "Then why did she betray me?"
