Skylar stopped looking at the president and smirked before pouring wine into her glass. She glanced at the bodyguard from the corner of her eye—noting the way his fingers twitched against the metal of his belt—and smiled when she saw the murderous glint behind his blank expression.
"Why is the room suddenly darker?" Jordan asked sarcastically, sipping his red wine. The alcohol bit his tongue, warming his throat with a slow burn. Bruce clenched his jaw and gulped his whiskey, the ice clinking sharply against the glass. The scent of oak and smoke lingered in the air.
"Anything else? Then we'll be taking our leave," Skylar said, standing. Jordan followed, the faint scuff of their shoes echoing in the quiet.
Just as Skylar was opening the door, Bruce's voice vibrated through the quiet space. Usually, it made people shiver in fear, but it didn't shake Skylar at all.
"Be careful on your way out," Bruce said.
