Caius's POV
Blood wine always tastes better when served in crystal. I swirled the dark liquid in my glass, watching the lights dance through it as I pretended to enjoy the tedious party around me. The Vampire High Court's monthly meeting was a necessary evil—a place where alliances formed and secrets slipped from loose lips.
I smiled at Lady Elara as she passed, her blood-red gown dragging behind her. She returned the smile, but it didn't reach her eyes. Interesting.
"Enjoying yourself, Prince Caius?" asked a smooth voice behind me.
I turned to face Lord Xavier Dracul, one of the oldest members of the court. His pale face was like smooth marble, giving nothing away.
"Always," I lied. "The Court has such... fascinating company."
Xavier chuckled. "Indeed. Although some find your new policies equally fascinating."
"Change is inevitable," I said, taking a careful sip of my wine. "Even for immortals."
