Milly sat in the corner, her fingers absently tracing the edge of her champagne glass. The hum of the party carried on around her, but she felt a world away. People were talking, laughing, enjoying the night, but the sounds only made her isolation more apparent. It was almost as if she was invisible, a ghost among the living.
She should have left. Her mind kept telling her to gather herself and walk out the door, but she didn't move. She couldn't. There was something about being here—about seeing Lily surrounded by her success—that anchored her, even if the weight of it was suffocating.
