"Everyone, please... just a moment of your time." Mr. Lawrence's voice echoed through the department just minutes before the lunch break.
Chairs creaked and keyboards clicked off as the staff turned toward their departmental chief. Some stood, others simply turned in their chairs, curiosity stirring in their eyes.
"I know many of you have been wondering about Ms. Stones," he began, his voice calm but heavy. "She hasn't been around the office lately, and it's time I told you why."
A wave of attention swept through the room. Sandra leaned forward slightly at her desk. George adjusted his glasses and stared.
Mr. Lawrence paused. "She fell ill. It was serious enough that she had to be hospitalized. But she's been discharged now and she is recovering well."
Gasps and murmurs moved through the room. Some frowned in concern. Others nodded quietly, processing the information.
"She's expected back very soon," he added. "So let's give her our support when she returns."
