The High Judicature had just arrived at the palace gates—and they did not come alone.
Flanking them in grim formation were the Demon Police, their black uniforms stark against the brooding sky that threatened a downpour.
Thunder rumbled faintly in the distance, as if the heavens themselves disapproved of the day's errand.
Outside the palace gates, they stood unyielding, demanding entry.
Within,a servant had already darted through the corridors to Stephen's chamber, breathless with urgency.
"The High Judicature has arrived, Your Majesty. With the Demon Police."
Stephen did not stir in alarm. Instead, he turned to Aurora, whose silent nod assured him all was as expected.
Calmly, he approached her and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead. Without another word, they departed the room together.
Aurora's heart pounded.
She had never known the terror of war, but today, she imagined it would feel much the same.
