Izuku's words echoed in her mind, replaying over and over like a broken record. "He used me. He seduced me. But… everything else was real?"
The line between what was real and what was a lie blurred in her mind. How much of their time together had been genuine? Did he really care for her, or was it all just a game for him to achieve his mission?
She tried to breathe, but each breath felt shallow, her chest tight with the weight of everything. And then there was the other truth—the darker one that had struck her like a lightning bolt.
Her father… her beloved father, the one she looked up to the most. David Shield was behind those horrific experiments. The images of those poor victims that Izuku showed flashed through her mind, their tortured faces, their broken bodies and minds.
"No, it couldn't be true. It can't be. He's definitely lying, he's trying to frame Dad," thought Melissa, having withdrawal symptoms, not wanting to believe that her father could do something like that to someone.
Melissa stood there for what felt like hours, though it could have been minutes, time seemed to have lost meaning. Her legs wobbled beneath her, but she didn't move. She didn't know how to. She didn't know where to go, what to think, or even what to feel. Her world had been thrown into chaos.
'Was any of it real? Was anything real?' thought Melissa.
The weight of it all became too much, and her heart felt like it was breaking apart in her chest. But deep down, she knew Izuku wasn't lying. She had seen the evidence with her own eyes. She had seen the lab, the suffering. But to think her own father was responsible for it…
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, she forced herself to move. Her body felt heavy, her steps uncertain as she walked through the alleys.
She was on autopilot now, her mind numb but her heart burning with questions. There was only one person who could give her the answers she desperately needed.
Melissa found herself walking back home, right outside her father's office. Her hand trembled as she reached for the doorknob, but she steeled herself. She had to know. She had to hear it from him.
She opened the door and stepped inside. Her father wasn't there. She searched through her lab to find any kind of evidence to support Izuku's claims. There were some suspicious things; however, none of them could support Izuku's claims.
Feeling relieved that her dad wasn't involved in it, and Izuku was lying calmed her down. However, the doubt in her mind wasn't satisfied. She needed to hear from her dad to come to some conclusion.
So she decided to ask him. She went back to her father, who was paralyzed right in front of the restricted area.
"Dad…" Melissa's voice was barely above a whisper, but it carried the weight of everything she was feeling. "Is it true?"
David didn't respond at first. The silence in the atmosphere was suffocating. Melissa felt her heart pounding in her chest with anticipation, the anxiety clawing at her throat.
"Is it true?" she repeated, louder this time, her voice cracking. "What Izuku showed me… what he told me… Is it true?
Are you involved in those inhumane experiments? Are you the mastermind behind all of that?" asked Melissa with all her might, hoping it was all a lie.
Her father still didn't say anything, but the look in his eyes said it all. He didn't need to say a word. David's lifeless face was filled with guilt, which screamed, "Everything is over. Yes, it's all true. I'm the mastermind behind all of this." Melissa's heart sank, a cold chill spreading through her entire body.
"No…" she whispered, shaking her head. "No… you couldn't… you wouldn't…" Her voice trembled, breaking with each word. "You… you're not… you're not a monster. You're not someone who would do something like this… why did you do something like that?"
But David remained silent, his eyes fixed on the floor. He couldn't look at her.
That was when it all came crashing down. Everything Izuku said, everything she saw both in the video and in his office—it was true.
Her father, the man she had idolized her entire life, had been involved in something so horrific, so inhumane, that she could barely even comprehend it. And that realization broke something inside her.
"How could you!?" Melissa screamed, her voice raw with emotion. "How could you do this?! How could you be a part of something so… so monstrous?!"
David flinched at her words, but still, he didn't say anything. He didn't try to explain or defend himself. He just sat there, his shoulders slumped, avoiding her gaze.
Tears welled up in Melissa's eyes, but they weren't just tears of sadness—they were tears of rage, of betrayal. "Do you have any idea what you've done? Do you even care?
Those poor people—those victims—they suffered because of you! You're supposed to be a hero! You're supposed to help people, not destroy them!"
Her father remained silent, and that silence only fueled her anger.
"You're not even going to say anything, are you?" Melissa's voice was shaking now, her hands clenched into fists at her sides. "You're just going to sit there and act like none of it matters… like I don't matter."
She took a step closer, her body trembling with the force of her emotions. "I trusted you! I believed in you! And this is what you've been hiding from me? This is who you really are?"
"I hate you," Melissa whispered, her voice breaking. "I hate you for what you've done. I hate you for lying to me… for doing things no human should do.
I hate you for committing something so monstrous, you don't deserve to be even called a human. Someone like you could never be my dad."
David finally looked up, but his eyes were filled with guilt, with shame. He opened his mouth as if to speak, but no words came out for a while.
"I did it for you," David finally muttered, his voice weak, almost pleading. "If the experiments had succeeded... you could have had a quirk. I could have given you a quirk."
Melissa froze. The words hit her like a punch to the gut, knocking the wind out of her. "For me?" she echoed, disbelief flooding her voice. "You... you were going to give me a quirk after ruining the lives of so many people?
You have the audacity to think that I would accept that?! To think that I wanted that?! When did I ever ask for a quirk, Dad?!"
David winced at her words, unable to respond, but she wasn't done. She stepped closer, her voice rising with each word. "Who gave you the right to harm those people?
Who told you that I needed this?! Who told you that I would be happy knowing the cost of getting a stupid quirk would be the suffering of so many people? Innocent people!" She exclaimed.
She was shouting now, her emotions pouring out of her like a burst dam. "I would rather stay quirkless for the rest of my life or die, rather than have a quirk that was born from so much suffering!"
Her anger bubbled over, and she lashed out, her words sharp and cutting. "You're not even human! You're a monster! You're worse than anyone I've ever met! How could you do this to those people… to me?!"
David lowered his head again, unable to meet her gaze, and that only made her angrier.
"You should just die," she spat, her voice dripping with venom. "You deserve nothing less for what you've done. Even Toji—he used me, played with my feelings—but at least he was honest about it.
He had a noble goal—to save those people you experimented on. I can find some peace knowing that, through him, I helped end their suffering, even if it was indirectly.
Toji using me, seducing me, manipulating my emotions—that's the price I had to pay for your sins. You hear that, I was used because of what you did, I was played with because you did something so monstrous."
Melissa's chest heaved as she finished, her body shaking with the intensity of everything she felt. Her heart was in pieces, shattered by the man she had once loved and admired.
She stood there, tears streaming down her face, feeling like her entire world had been ripped away from her.
David didn't say a word. He couldn't. He just sat there, broken and silent, while his daughter's words hung in the air, the weight of her betrayal crashing down on them both.
And in that moment, Melissa knew that nothing would ever be the same again. The man she had called her father was gone, replaced by someone she could never forgive.
