They pressed forward into the dark tunnel, their footsteps echoing softly against the stones that looks old. A breeze whispered through the passage — faint but constant — and at first, it gave them hope. Maybe there was an opening ahead, some connection to the outside world, fresh air and light.
But as they walked unease crept in their hearts.
The breeze wasn't refreshing. It carried a strange acrid tang like something unnatural. It didn't feel like air meant for breathing. It felt…wrong, heavy, and tainted.
"Close your nose and mouth, guys," Axel said sharply, his voice muffled with tension. "I don't think this air is safe."
The others didn't need convincing. They reached into their waist bag and quickly pulled out their masks, strapping them on with practiced hands. The moment the filters sealed in place they felt a faint sense of relief, but not safety.
