On the day of his spiritual awakening, the heavens rejected him.
In a grand hall lit by floating jade lanterns, disciples stood one by one as glowing symbols marked their destinies. The moment Ashen Kai placed his hand on the jade pillar, it flickered… then dimmed.
"No spiritual root," the elder announced, voice flat with finality.
Gasps echoed.
He was eighteen. Today was his test. The day to prove he could cultivate.
Instead, Heaven offered silence.
Kai stood frozen. Not in shock—he already knew this would happen. He'd always known he was different. And now it was confirmed.
The others moved on, whispering as they walked past.
"Waste of food."
"He's not even a cripple. He's less than one."
But Ashen Kai didn't bow. He didn't kneel.
He just watched the sky. And quietly, somewhere deep inside him, something awakened.
Not a root.
Not Qi.
Not a spirit beast.
