Chapter 2 - CHAPTER TWO

"The car is set." Maxwell announced as he ventured back into the living room. Freya sighed, and grabbed her car keys. She stepped out of the room and suddenly stopped.

She glanced at Maxwell and frowned slightly.

"Are you following me like this?" She muttered, slapping her palm against her forehead.

Maxwell's eyes popped open, he couldn't believe his ears. Since his three years of marriage to Freya, he has not been allowed to visit the company. They believed he was an unfortunate man and would bring nothing but misfortune to them.

"But won't grandma Adele blame you for taking me along?" He asked her, staring straight into her eyes.

Freya sighed before saying; "Don't ask questions. Just do as you are told."

Maxwell nodded his head and went back inside. He bit his lower lips as he changed his clothes. He couldn't visit the bank and the company that day again so he needed a change of plans.

He strapped his old torn belt around his waist and sighed, walked towards a big box and pursed his lips.

After some seconds of thinking, he lifted down the box, zipped it open and took out a golden envelope.

The golden envelope was gifted to him by his father before his sudden death. His father had warned that he must not open the envelope until the day he turns twenty-seven.

Taking a deep breath, he decided to open the envelope since that day was his twenty-seventh birthday.

As he tore the envelope open, his heart pounded and his mouth opened wide.

A diamond card was hidden inside the envelope, with his name neatly printed on it. Rumor has it that only seven of the cards were present in the entire world, and only influential men have one in their possession.

The card holds an unlimited amount of money, and it could get him anything he ever wanted.

He couldn't believe he had been in possession of something golden over the years. He was still immersed in his excitement when Freya's voice thundered into his room.

"Is it your goal for granny to finally kick me out of the family? Or why would you want me to arrive late to our project exhibition?" She asked furiously

Maxwell slid the card into his pocket and rushed to the living room.

"How could I have forgotten it's today? I am sorry." He mumbled with a smile. Freya rolled her hand and walked towards her car. Maxwell joined her in the car and they drove off.

They arrived at the company not quite long after. The company was lively and well decorated, influential men trooped in and out of the company.

The project involved building a seven-star hotel in the city, and many men wanted to see the plan and invest in it.

"Why are you just arriving, Mrs Freya? The exhibition is over, the White's family has signed a contract with us, we will be working together with them." Clara, Freya's assistant said as she alighted her car.

"White's family?" Maxwell asked in shock, his eyes almost popping out of the socket.

"Do you have any problem with that?" Freya frowned at him.

"No…not at all. I am just wondering why it would be them. I have heard that the White's family is intimidating and can forcefully get anything they want due to their influence." Maxwell hurriedly replied.

Freya shook her head and hissed.

"Baseless rumor." She mumbled.

"My lady, he is right. I am afraid granny will blame you once you go upstairs. The White's family took advantage of our company collapsing and tried buying our idea, saying they would offer a huge amount for it which we could use to save our company. Granny didn't agree, so they offered to be receiving seventy percent of the project's return." Clara added.

"What?" Freya screamed in shock, her eyes bulging out.

"They said it wasn't worth it to do business with a collapsing company, and that they could only risk it if they were getting a larger share of the revenue generated. Granny couldn't help the embarrassment so she had to give in." Freya took a deep breath as the words traveled down her eardrums.

She knew she was in for some naggings that day. She had fallen victim to some scammers who pretended to have good intentions towards their company. Without seeking Adele's consent, she had transferred over a hundred million dollars from the company's assets to the men.

She sighed and climbed the stairs. She could notice several sore gazes from the workers. Even though they didn't have the mind to confront her and say it to her face, she knew they were probably talking bad about her.

She arrived in front of the board room and placed her hand on the door knob. Maxwell noticed how flustered she was, and placed her hand on her shoulder, he smiled at him warmly.

"It will be fine, trust me." Maxwell said to her, and it was as if Maxwell's words filled her with some kind of energy. She instantly pushed the door open, and a grave silence hit the ground, as if they were expecting her to enter.

"The loser is here! We've been disgraced, are you happy now?"
