Chapter 1 - Death is but a blink away

The cicadas sing their chirping song and an owl hoots in the distance. I kick a muddy pinecone as I walk through the forest hoping I am heading in the right direction. My idiot friends thought it would be a brilliant idea to drive off and leave me in the forest.

"Those fuckers" i mumble to myself listening to the leaves crunching under my old boots.

The forest is almost pitch black now except for the streaks of moonlight slipping through the tree tops. My phone is dead, but thankfully our cabin isn't that far from here, maybe a mile or so if I had to guess.

I should have paid more attention to where we were heading but I was too tired to care at the time. I remember them snickering and whispering, but I assumed that was just them being idiots again.

I hear a strange noise in the distance but don't pay any mind to it, because it is most likely just an animal. The noise continues getting louder and closer as I walk on. I start to suspect that it might not be an animal after all. It sounds like a little girl whispering something inaudible.

"Hello? Is someone out there? Do you need help?" I know this is probably the stupidest thing I could do considering I have seen my fair share of horror movies, but I can't help myself.

Her voice is now close and louder.

"Shhh don't speak, don't look. It will find you." she says, her voice piercing and airy.

I hear footsteps in the distance.

Now I'm really starting to freak out, but I take a deep breath to calm myself down.

The footsteps start running now in my direction. I see a small thin girl with hair that clearly hasn't been brushed for quite some time and wearing a ragged blind fold, running at me.

I don't even have time to react before she has grabbed my face and covered my eyes.

"Get off me" I yell, grabbing at the child's hand, but her grip only tightens, her little fingers dig into my skin giving me a throbbing head ache.

"Stop resisting or they will find you" she says in that same eerie voice.

"Who will? Get off!" I yell, ripping the child off of me.

She falls to the ground and I open my eyes.

I start running and the child doesn't follow me.

I look back to see the child still sitting on the ground not moving. keep on running, i see the lights to our cabin up ahead.

Suddenly, someone trips me and I go plummeting towards the ground.

I hear strange noises and someone steps on me hard. I grunt in pain and try to free myself but it's no use.

"Don't try squirming, human" said the thing slowly.

"Who are you?" I stammer, trying not to crack.

"Oh don't you worry your puny head about that."

I start shaking uncontrollably. The pain from the thing being on my back sent chocks of pain through my body.

The thing took a long breath in next to my ear that made me shudder.

"Ohh, the smell of human always gets me tingly"

"There are beings like me who would love to see you unravel, feel fear emit from every molecule in your body. They would put things inside of you, both dry and wet. Watch the blood run down like a cursed river. Feed off of your screams and cries. Watch the life in your eyes fade away the longer we keep you. Have you beg us to kill you. "

I wanted to hurl. My insides felt turned upside down and tears started streaming down my face mixing with the mud.

"But no need to worry, I'm not that cruel, death is but a blink away."
