Chapter 63 - Chapter 63: I like you very much

Madam Long clicked her tongue in surprise, "Your former girlfriend?"

"Yes, we dated abroad for a year before parting ways; it's been over two years now."

Madam Long had never met her before. "What is your name?"

"He Meiwei."

"That name…" Madam Long mused thoughtfully. "I recall Yubei mentioning it once—so it is you."

He Meiwei nodded gently. "May I call you Auntie?"

Madam Long smiled warmly. "Of course, you may."

"Auntie, you are far younger and more approachable than the photos I once saw online. When I was courting Mr. Long, I often imagined a grand matron like you must be stern and distant. Meeting you today, I realize how mistaken I was."

Madam Long's smile deepened. "Why did you and Yubei part ways back then?"

Embarrassed, He Meiwei confessed, "I was diagnosed with uremia and left without a word, only leaving him a breakup letter. That was how we separated. I underwent a transplant, but the results were poor. Recently, Mr. Long discovered the truth and helped me find a new donor. Now, I have recovered greatly, and I am truly grateful to him."

Madam Long was genuinely taken aback. "You should have told him when you fell ill. We had the means to find a donor for you."

"It was my own choice. I loved him too much to show him my imperfections. I didn't want him to worry or suffer on my behalf. To be honest, I regret that decision now." Her eyes glistened with tears. "Without me, he has others by his side. As for me, I have nothing left—not even the means to pay for medical expenses. I have been praying lately, hoping for a better future."

Madam Long's eyes softened with pity. "Such a considerate young lady. Let me take care of your medical expenses, in light of your past relationship with Yubei. Will you allow me?"

He Meiwei shook her head firmly. "Auntie, I appreciate your kindness, but I cannot accept it. I have no right. I will earn the money myself."

Madam Long did not expect her refusal and immediately regarded He Meiwei with newfound respect. "You and Yubei were fated but not meant to be. I believe your future holds better fortunes."

He Meiwei smiled bitterly. "I doubt it. Who knows how long I have to live? Even so, I have loved him all along, despite dating another man after our breakup. But I never let go of him. Unfortunately, he's moved on and married Mrs. Long."

Madam Long sighed softly. "In truth, Yubei does not truly love her. She gained favor in our family through some underhanded means. It's a complicated matter, and you need not grieve too much. Focus on regaining your health."

Her words stirred something within He Meiwei—Madam Long's clear disdain for Gu Lili presented an unexpected opening.

"Thank you for your concern, Auntie."

Together they proceeded to offer their prayers. The rain continued to fall steadily for some time.

After the ceremony, neither of them left immediately; they lingered to talk a while longer.

Madam Long's sympathy for the young woman grew steadily. "You must come visit us at home sometime."

"May I?" He Meiwei's lips curved gently. "Meeting you today has been so heartwarming—I truly like you."
