Chapter 8 - ch 8: Duel in the Black Arena

The Black Arena stood silent, save for the distant hum of enchantments activating around its obsidian-lined floor. Students gathered across the upper balconies, hushed in anticipation. The duel between Kai Drakonis and Zephyr Runehart was no small affair. It had drawn even the attention of a few seated instructors.

Kai stepped into the arena with steady, silent strides. No dramatic aura. No taunts. Just a sword in hand and sharp, measured eyes.

Zephyr waited on the opposite end, spinning a dagger between his fingers, relaxed but focused.

The Head Instructor, Varyn, raised a hand.

"You know the rules. Duel ends by incapacitation, surrender, or instructor intervention. Begin."

Zephyr moved first—fast.

Kai's eyes narrowed as the older student vanished into the shadows, his dagger swinging from behind. Kai leaned forward, rotating his shoulder just enough to deflect the blow with the flat of his blade.

Clink.

A small smile tugged at Zephyr's lips.

"You don't move like a first-year."

Kai didn't respond. He adjusted his stance—low and angled, grounded.

Zephyr attacked again, striking from different angles with a flow of feints and quick cuts. His footwork was tight, practiced.

Kai held position, defending with patience, absorbing pressure without panic. He wasn't trying to overwhelm—he was learning. Every strike revealed something. A rhythm. A weakness.

When he struck back, it was clean and simple—a diagonal slash that forced Zephyr to dodge sideways, breaking his momentum.

Zephyr jumped back, flicking a rune on his glove. "Shadow Bind."

Dark tendrils burst from his feet toward Kai. The move had caught many students before—but Kai had already started moving the moment the chant began.

He leapt past the tendrils, closed the gap, and struck at Zephyr's side with his blade's hilt, not the edge.

Thud.

Zephyr staggered back a few steps.

Kai spoke for the first time. "You're relying too much on misdirection. Not enough pressure."

Zephyr chuckled, winded. "You fight like someone who's used to real pain."

Kai didn't answer.

Instead, he advanced again, calmly and precisely.

The exchange continued for another minute—sharp, clean, disciplined.

Zephyr attempted one final gambit: a feint into a backflip dagger throw, designed to disorient.

Kai dodged it smoothly and stepped into Zephyr's blind spot. With a precise sweep, he knocked his opponent off balance, followed by a blade pointed to his neck—not touching, but close enough that the duel was over.

Zephyr held up both hands.

"I yield."

The crowd clapped—not roaring cheers, but the kind of applause that came from recognition. A clean fight. No wasted movements. No ego. Just technique and awareness.

Instructor Varyn gave a nod.

"Well executed, both of you. Winner: Kai Drakonis."

Zephyr extended his hand as they walked off the field. "You're good. Not flashy, but good."

Kai shook it. "You too. You made me think."

Later That Night

Kai sat in his dorm, shirt discarded, tending to a bruise along his ribs. He'd taken a few hits despite the clean victory.
