Silas Blackwood hesitated, his face etched with inner turmoil. The decision to betray his former comrades was clearly weighing heavily on him, the ghosts of his past whispering in his ear. He knew that by talking, he was signing his own death warrant. But he also knew that silence would condemn the world to an even worse fate. His bargain with them was as much to save his own soul as it was to save the world.
Kevin leaned forward, his expression earnest. "Silas, we understand what you're going through. But innocent lives are at stake. The Serpent's Hand won't hesitate to sacrifice anyone to achieve their goals. You have the chance to stop them, to atone for your past actions." He paused, letting his words sink in. "Tell us everything. Every detail, no matter how small it may seem. It could be the key to stopping them."
Lily nodded in agreement. "We're not asking you to do this alone. We're here to help you, to protect you. But we can't do that unless you trust us." She softened her tone, injecting a note of compassion into her voice. "Think of it as a way to save your own life too."
Blackwood closed his eyes, taking a deep breath, as if gathering the last vestiges of his courage. When he opened them, his gaze was resolute, his voice firm. "Alright," he said. "Where do I begin?"
"Start with their leadership," Kevin prompted. "Who are the key figures? Who's calling the shots?"
Blackwood paused again, his brow furrowed in concentration. "There's a council," he said. "They call themselves the Inner Circle. There are five members, each representing a different aspect of the Serpent's Hand's power."
"Name them," Lily urged, her pen poised above a notepad.
"First, there's Master Thorne," Blackwood began. "He's the most senior member, the one who's been with the Serpent's Hand the longest. He's a master of dark magic, a powerful sorcerer. He controls the Serpent's Hand's occult activities, overseeing the rituals and summoning the dark entities they use to further their goals."
"And the others?" Kevin asked.
"Next is Madame Evangeline," Blackwood continued. "She's in charge of the Serpent's Hand's finances, their resources. She has connections all over the world and is very wealthy. She is the only woman on the Inner Circle. She is ruthless and cunning, and is the glue that holds the whole organization together."
"The third is known as The Doctor," Blackwood said, his voice dropping to a near whisper. "His real name is unknown. He is an evil genius, a master of technology and genetic manipulation. He is in charge of creating new weapons and tools for the Serpent's Hand, and he's also responsible for some of their more… gruesome experiments."
Lily shuddered. "Experiments? What kind of experiments?"
Blackwood hesitated, his face paling. "I don't want to go into detail," he said. "Let's just say they involve… altering human beings, twisting them into something… unnatural."
Kevin pressed on. "Who are the other two?"
"The fourth member is known as 'The Collector,'" Blackwood said. "He travels the world in search of ancient artifacts and powerful objects that can be used to further the Serpent's Hand's agenda. He is meticulous and thorough and will stop at nothing to acquire what he seeks."
"And the last one?" Lily asked.
Blackwood hesitated, his face contorted in fear. "The fifth member… is someone I never met. They are only known as 'The Shadow'. Even within the Inner Circle, their identity is shrouded in secrecy. I only know that they are the one that deals directly with X'zoth. They are his voice in this world."
"What about their base of operations?" Kevin asked. "Where are they located?"
Blackwood shook his head. "I don't know," he said. "They always kept that information secret. We were only given instructions, never told where they came from."
"Think!" Lily urged. "There must be something you remember. A landmark, a code word, anything!"
Blackwood closed his eyes, straining to recall any detail that might be helpful. "There was… a symbol," he said, his voice barely a whisper. "A serpent coiled around a skull. I saw it on a few documents, on a few doors. I think it might be a key… a way to identify their safe houses."
"Anything else?" Kevin asked.
"Yes," Blackwood said. "There was a ritual. A summoning ritual, to open the portals for X'zoth. It requires a specific location, a place where the veil between worlds is thin. They called it 'The Nexus Point'."
"Where is this Nexus Point?" Lily asked, her voice filled with anticipation.
Blackwood shook his head again. "I don't know the exact location. But I know what they need to activate it. An artifact. A powerful artifact, called 'The Obsidian Heart'."
"The Obsidian Heart…" Kevin repeated, his mind racing. "What is it?"
"It's an ancient artifact, said to contain the essence of a dark god," Blackwood explained. "It's been hidden away for centuries, protected by powerful magic. The Serpent's Hand has been searching for it for years."
"Do you know where it is?" Lily asked, her eyes wide with hope.
Blackwood hesitated, his face pale. "I… I think so," he said. "There was a rumor… a whisper among the Inner Circle. The Obsidian Heart… is said to be hidden in… the catacombs beneath Rome."
Rome. The Eternal City. The heart of the ancient world. Kevin exchanged a look with Lily, a silent acknowledgment of the dangerous path ahead. The catacombs beneath Rome were a labyrinth of tunnels and tombs, a place of darkness and death. Finding the Obsidian Heart would be a perilous task, but they had no choice. The fate of the world depended on it.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from outside the apartment. Blackwood gasped, his eyes wide with terror. "They found me!" he exclaimed. "They know I'm here!"
Before Kevin or Lily could react, the door burst open, and two figures stormed into the room. They were dressed in black, their faces hidden behind masks. They were armed with sophisticated weapons, their movements swift and deadly. Members of The Serpent's Hand.
"Silas Blackwood," one of the figures said, his voice cold and menacing. "You have betrayed us. Now you will pay the price."
Kevin and Lily moved instantly, drawing their own weapons, ready to defend themselves and protect their informant. The battle had begun. But in the chaos, a figure emerged from the shadows, unnoticed. The Shadow. And in their hand, the Serpent's Hand signal beacon, activated to bring even more reinforcements.
The small apartment was about to become a warzone, and time was running out.
