It began with déjà vu.
Not once. Not twice.
But endlessly.
The Ghostbusters had just returned to GhostNet HQ after stabilizing the anomaly outbreak at the Architect's chamber. Juno placed the Seed in its cradle. Lila logged the anomaly data. Max poured himself a terrible cup of coffee.
And then, without warning...
The lights flickered.
The walls shimmered.
They were standing at the entrance to GhostNet HQ, just arriving.
Again.
The First Cycle
"Wait... didn't we just do this?" Max said, frowning at the hallway.
Juno paused.
"No, we were..."
She looked down.
Her boots were dry.
They'd been wet seconds ago... from the pool of memory fluid beneath the Architect's chamber.
Her pulse quickened.
"Lila. Run a timestamp scan."
Lila tapped her device.
Froze.
"Juno... we've been here for four days."
"No, we just left the Architect zone."
"According to this? We've done that seventeen times."
The Loop Engine
The Echo had activated his most vicious tactic.
A Loop Engine... a recursive layer of code grafted onto the Matrix's temporal logic. It didn't trap bodies.
It trapped decisions.
It fed on regret.
Every time the Ghostbusters made a choice... to go left instead of right, to speak or remain silent—it recorded it. When failure came, it rewound them to the point before, layering new outcomes over old ones until reality became choice soup.
They didn't notice they were trapped.
Until they did.
And by then, it was already too late.
Loop #23 - Juno's Choice
Juno walked into the ops center and stared at the Seed.
Its glow pulsed with frustration.
Like it knew it was being rewound. Like it was angry.
She clenched her fists.
"We're in a recursive trap. A choice snare. If we don't find the center... we'll relive this until we break."
Max nodded.
"So we stop playing by the script."
Loop #24 - The Wrong Path
They tried to escape.
They left the HQ. Headed into the Matrix. Searched for the breach.
But it wasn't there.
Every exit returned them to the beginning.
Even death.
Max shot himself in one loop... hoping to reset.
He woke up in the hallway.
Alive.
Afraid.
Loop #29 - Lila's Descent
Lila tried to hack the Loop Engine from within.
She dove into the system's recursion logs... pages of choices stacked atop one another. Thousands of them.
In one, she left the team behind.
In another, she sabotaged the Seed.
In a third, she joined the Echo.
Each time, the system made her remember.
When she returned, her eyes were hollow.
"It's showing us every path we didn't take," she whispered. "Every failure we could've become."
"Why?" Max asked.
"Because it wants to break us from within."
Loop #31 - The Turn
They found a pattern.
Every loop started the same... returning to the HQ doors.
But Juno noticed a glitch.
A door that hadn't been there before.
Half-formed. Flickering.
Each loop, it got *closer to solid.*
"The system's bleeding new possibilities," she said. "It's learning from our resistance. This loop isn't perfect anymore."
She grabbed the Seed.
"We're not trying to escape. We're trying to *corrupt* the loop engine with intent."
Loop #34 - The Inversion
This time, they didn't resist.
They followed the script.
They logged the anomaly data. They drank the coffee. They ignored the inconsistencies.
The system relaxed.
That's when Max slipped the quantum shunt into the power node.
When Lila inserted the echo-code into the feedback relay.
When Juno linked the Seed directly to the Matrix's timestamp register.
They hijacked the loop.
And the door solidified.
The Loop Engine Core
It was a circular room of glass and light—identical to the Architect's, but cracked and shaking.
The Loop Engine floated at its center.
A sphere of infinite mirrors, each one showing a different Juno, Max, and Lila... some old, some gone, some dead, some victorious.
They heard a voice.
"Welcome. You've finally made every mistake."
The Meta-Smith appeared... not in his old form, but as a composite. Echo fragments. The Broken One's face. The Author's logic.
"You see now. There is no path you can take that does not end with me."
Juno stepped forward.
"That's not true. We made a new one."
She threw the Seed into the Engine.
It struck like lightning.
The mirrors shattered.
Every Juno, Max, and Lila screamed in unison... then merged.
Into one.
Time Restored
The HQ rebooted.
The walls held.
Lila woke first.
Then Max.
Then Juno.
Outside the window, the Matrix pulsed, not in chaos, but in order.
They were free.
Juno looked at her team.
"How long were we trapped?"
Lila checked the logs.
Her voice cracked.
"Thirty-nine loops. Twelve hours each. That's... over nineteen days."
Max exhaled.
"That explains the dream where I ran a taco stand in Sector 4."
They laughed... just a little.
But they were tired.
Juno stared at the Seed.
It pulsed *differently* now.
Like it had learned.
Echo Core - The Tremble
The Meta-Smith felt it.
A shudder.
A hesitation in the Hive.
The loop was broken.
The humans had endured *infinity*.
And now… they were changing.
He looked into the code and saw something impossible:
"They're becoming Anomalies."
He whispered a new directive.
"Accelerate the collapse."
And behind him, the sky cracked.
