Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Warmth

The next day lingered with a gray sky and a soft chill in the air. Narumi found himself wandering the school grounds, thoughts heavy, until his steps slowed near the courtyard.

There—across the open field—was Hanabi.

She stood quietly by the fence, hands loosely at her sides. Her hair caught the breeze, and for a moment, she looked just like she had all those years ago.

Narumi raised a hand. Waved.

She hesitated—then returned the gesture.

That was all he needed.

He motioned gently for her to come over.

She walked slowly, her steps careful but not unwilling. When she reached him, her eyes searched his.

"I figured it out," Narumi said, voice quiet. "You knew me for a long time. You liked me. And I... I don't want to be someone else's shadow. Neither should you."

Hanabi looked at him, silent, unreadable.

"Can I... hug you?" he asked, voice soft. "Maybe I'll find the answer there."

She didn't move for a second—then slowly stepped forward into his arms.

He held her gently. Not tight. Not desperate. Just enough.

"You're warm, Hanabi... just like fireworks."

She tensed slightly at first, then melted into his embrace.

The wind stirred, the air around them quiet but not empty. Her warmth remained, not just in his arms but in his chest.

And in that still moment, Narumi realized— this wasn't a beginning. It was a return. To something long buried. And still burning.
