The morning sun rose with a faint crimson hue above Dwargo, casting long shadows across the worn stone paths outside the dwarven city. The echo of clinking metal and rhythmic hammer strikes faded behind the party of twelve as they ventured beyond the gates, stepping into the rugged wilderness of the northern highlands. They had a simple mission: hunt wild red cows and black bulls for meat and leather, resources that would both feed them and bolster their gear.
Kyle adjusted the strap on his rifle, eyes scanning the horizon. "Alright, team. Let's get moo-ving."
Jessica sighed. "You're not allowed to make puns before breakfast."
"Too late," he grinned.
Fuhiken took point, shield held close to his side, his eyes scanning every shift in the landscape. The uneven ground crackled beneath his boots, a chaotic mix of loose gravel and gnarled roots that twisted like sleeping serpents. He moved with a quiet vigilance, his every step measured.
Gaby matched his pace, her longbow strung and ready, eyes darting between the tree lines. "You feel that?" she asked softly.
"The ground's too quiet," Fuhiken replied. "Something's watching. Or everything's hiding."
She nodded, drawing an arrow from her quiver, not yet aiming, but poised. "Think the bulls are nearby?"
"If they are, they're smart enough to keep out of sight for now." He glanced back at the others, who were in various stages of weapon prep and light bickering. "We'll need to keep them focused."
Gaby exhaled slowly, a calm presence amid the low-level chaos that followed their group like an ever-present storm. "I'll keep watch on the left flank. You take the lead."
He offered a rare smile. "Wouldn't want anyone else watching my back."
Gigih lagged slightly behind, flipping through his weathered spellbook. "Fire I should be enough," he muttered, fingers glowing faintly.
"Don't overcharge it," Yuuna reminded without looking up from her notes. "The last thing we need is a barbecue explosion."
They didn't wait long. From a distant hill, a herd of red cows grazed near the edge of a sparse woodland, the occasional black bull patrolling around them like a watchful sentinel.
Adiw cracked his knuckles and reached for the great two-handed sword strapped across his back. The weapon came free with a metallic hum, its iron edge gleaming in the sun. He planted it into the earth before him, hands gripping the hilt.
"Finally," he said with a grin. "Been itching to stretch my arms."
He looked over at Kyle. "Bet I take down more than you."
"You wish," Kyle replied, raising an eyebrow. "Speed beats strength, big guy."
"We'll see," Adiw said, hoisting the sword over his shoulder with practiced ease. The ground quivered beneath his boots as he took a step forward, eyes locked on the approaching herd.
Yetsan stepped forward, lance at the ready. "Twelve targets. Let's keep it clean."
The first clash came swift. Gigih whispered a quick incantation, releasing a controlled burst of flame toward one of the bulls. It reared, bellowed, and charged. Fuhiken intercepted with his shield, bracing against the impact. Sparks flew.
"Target neutralized," Gaby said calmly, loosing an arrow into the creature's flank.
Kyle took a knee, eyes narrowing through his scope. "Wind, two ticks west. Gotcha." A blue mana bullet exploded with precise force, dropping a second cow with minimal damage to its hide.
"Perfect shot," Yuuna noted.
"Antares never misses," Kyle replied, patting his rifle.
Sakura stood behind the front line, staff in hand, sending healing pulses where needed. Orchid and Jessica fought side by side, blades carving through with calculated grace. Fahleena, dramatically chanting what sounded like a celestial poem, launched her keyblade in a wide arc, striking three cows in a single throw.
"Return, blade of destiny!" she cried.
The keyblade spun back into her grasp with a satisfying clang.
"That actually worked," Sinryo muttered, dual daggers flashing as he finished off a weakened bull.
By late afternoon, the herd was subdued. The party gathered resources, storing meat and leather in their Magic Bags. The air smelled of earth and blood, but morale remained high. No injuries, no accidents. Not even a single unexpected explosion.
"Oddly smooth," Yuuna remarked. "I don't trust it."
---
Night fell over their temporary camp. Orchid clapped her hands with excitement as the party settled around the campfire. "I'll cook tonight! I've been working on a new technique, Holy Ember Caramelization!"
Yuuna's head snapped up. "Absolutely not."
Fahleena took a cautious step back. "Last time you caramelized something, it started glowing."
"And twitching," Sinryo added. "Don't forget the twitching."
Orchid puffed her cheeks. "That was a misunderstood flan! This will be different. I have chocolate seasoning!"
"We're working with beef, not dessert," Gaby said gently but firmly.
Adiw crossed his arms. "And I'd rather not die eating it."
Orchid looked genuinely heartbroken. "But I even brought my mana-whisk..."
"Nope," Kyle said quickly, snatching the whisk. "Confiscated for public safety."
Orchid sighed, sinking to her seat. "One day, my culinary genius will be appreciated."
"Not until the food stops growling back," Jessica muttered, drawing laughter from the group.
Unbothered by rejection, Orchid turned her attention to her backpack once everyone was distracted by Fuhiken's stew. She quietly pulled out a small bundle wrapped in enchanted cloth and opened it with care. Inside were carefully measured ingredients: cocoa powder, dried mana-butter, sugar crystals, and something she labeled as "flavor catalyst, mildly stable."
She glanced around. No one watching. With expert stealth, she tiptoed behind a large boulder at the edge of camp and conjured a micro flame spell just above a flat stone.
"This will be my masterpiece," she whispered. "Chocolate Comet Crunch II."
The ingredients danced under her enchanted whisk, glowing slightly. The aroma began to drift back toward the fire.
Yuuna sniffed. "Is that... sugar?"
Sinryo raised a brow. "I swear I smell chocolate."
"I told you it follows her," Fahleena muttered.
Behind the boulder, Orchid giggled quietly. "They'll see. Oh yes... they'll see."
---
Fuhiken prepared stew using the fresh meat, while the others set up a circle of lanterns. Yuuna lit her newest invention: a Magic Chess board.
She set it down on a flat stone, the carved pieces glowing faintly in the lamplight. "It's called Magic Chess," she announced. "Not actually magical, but strategically invaluable."
Orchid tilted her head. "Looks complicated."
"It's not," Yuuna said. "There are pieces: knight, bishop, rook, but with our own flair. The knight is shaped like a dragon. The pawn, a jellyfish."
"Why a jellyfish?" Fahleena asked.
"Because they're underestimated and dangerous when ignored."
Kyle grinned. "You're speaking my language. Let's play."
He sat opposite Yuuna. The others circled around as observers. The match began with swift moves, calculated openings. Kyle's confidence wavered as Yuuna's strategy unraveled his midline.
"You think ten moves ahead," he muttered.
"I'm holding back," she replied.
Ten minutes later, his king was cornered.
"Checkmate," Yuuna declared.
Kyle groaned, flopping back onto the grass with theatrical defeat. "This game is rigged. I had a whole strategy lined up. The pawn sacrifice was supposed to open your flank."
"Except you forgot I don't need that flank," Yuuna said without missing a beat, calmly resetting the board. "I countered with the rook sweep and boxed in your queen."
"And turned my entire army into jellyfish soup," Kyle muttered.
Fahleena leaned in with mock solemnity. "A tragic loss for the Kingdom of Moo."
"There was no kingdom," Kyle grumbled.
"There was hope," Gaby added dryly. "For about two moves."
Sinryo chuckled. "Next time, maybe don't play against the girl who treats strategy like bedtime reading."
Kyle raised a finger from the ground. "Next time... I use pudding-based motivation."
"Your ego is," Sinryo offered.

Yuuna explained the chess rules to Orchid and Fahleena. Twice.
The first time, Orchid asked if the bishop could cast holy spells, and Fahleena tried to assign star alignment attributes to each square.
"It's not that kind of board," Yuuna said flatly, pointing to the diagram. "No blessings, no fate seals, no celestial amplifiers. Just logic."
Orchid pouted. "But what if I sanctify the knight piece? It looks righteous."
"That's a dragon," Yuuna replied. "And no."
Fahleena leaned over the board dramatically. "I propose each pawn is a soul-bound warrior sent on a quest, "
Yuuna sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Okay. Once more. The pawn moves forward. One square. Diagonals only for attacks. That's it."
"Unless they're channeling latent starlight?" Fahleena offered helpfully.
"No," Yuuna deadpanned.
The two nodded solemnly. Then Orchid asked if she could name her rook Holy Fortress of Cocoa. Yuuna walked away.
"I'll take that as a yes," Orchid chirped.
Yuuna scheduled the next match. Orchid vs. Fahleena.
As the two girls stepped toward the board, a sudden gust of wind stirred the campfire. Shadows danced across their faces. Orchid clutched a bishop piece with suspicious reverence, while Fahleena held a pawn aloft as though invoking divine favor.
Yuuna raised a brow. "Please just play normally."
Neither responded. In the distance, behind the boulder where Orchid had cooked earlier, something pulsed. A faint chocolate-scented shimmer flickered along the edges of the stone.
Jessica stood up slowly. "Um... is that glowing?"
No one had time to answer. The ground trembled beneath their feet. A low hum echoed from the boulder.
Orchid blinked. "Wait, I didn't add that much catalyst..."
Then, A blinding light flared skyward, followed by a deep, echoing pop.
